Jay McCormick of Austin, Texas passed away on July 27, 2022 at the age of 43. He was born on August 5, 1978, in Austin, Texas, to Rickey and Marilyn McCormick. Jay grew up in Austin and attended Crockett High School. He later attended Southwest Texas University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Criminal Justice.
Jay had a passion for public service. This passion led to a career with the Austin Police Department, beginning in 1998 as an intern with the Office of Community Liaison. In May of 2002, Jay joined the 105th cadet class of the Austin Police Department. He recognized his dream of becoming a commissioned police officer in November that same year. Jay served the Austin community on patrol in Central East Austin and Downtown Austin before joining the Austin Police Department’s Bomb Squad.
Jay found his calling within the bomb squad community. With over 12 years of service as a bomb technician with the Austin Police Department and ten surrounding counties, he was well respected for his dedication and proficiencies. In addition to his contributions as a skilled EOD technician, he also shared his knowledge with officers and various departments throughout Texas as a certified instructor for the ATF and FBI, traveling around the state as part of the Texas Explosive Task Force. At the time of his death, he was enrolled at Oklahoma State University online to become a Certified Explosives Specialist.
Jay was an avid University of Texas Longhorns fan and a season ticket holder for many years. When he wasn’t occupying his seat with the fans cheering on the Longhorns, he could be found donning his bomb squad uniform on the sidelines.
When he wasn’t working or watching football, Jay enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his nephews, Mason and Maverick. He also loved spending time outdoors. Some of his favorite memories were made by the pool, at the beach, or on the lake fishing with his dad Rickey.
Jay is survived by his parents, Rickey and Marilyn McCormick, sister Heidi Wittie, brother-in-law Matthew Wittie, two nephews, Mason and Maverick, and many cherished family members and friends.
