

Born in Lockhart to Leroy Schaefer and the late Rachel Schaefer, Jeannie was a beacon of light and resilience. Her unyielding strength and humor in the face of adversity inspired all who knew her. She faced every challenge with a smile, a witty remark, and an unwavering spirit, reminding everyone that life, no matter the circumstances, was meant to be cherished and lived to the fullest.
Jeannie’s commitment to education and lifelong learning was a cornerstone of her life. Her academic journey began in 8th grade when she served as a Senate Page for Texas Senator Lloyd Doggett, an experience that ignited her passion for knowledge and civic engagement. She graduated with honors from Austin Community College, earning an Associate of Arts in Teaching with a focus on Education Instruction, and later achieved summa cum laude distinction from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. During her time at Texas State, she frequently earned a place on the Dean’s List, reflecting her dedication and hard work. As an active alumna of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Jeannie formed cherished friendships and gave back to her community through countless acts of service.
A deeply giving soul, Jeannie was known for her compassion and generosity. She dedicated much of her life to helping others, whether through her community involvement, her acts of kindness, or simply offering a listening ear. Her ability to connect with people and make them feel seen and loved was one of her greatest gifts.
Jeannie’s greatest joy in life was her family. In addition to her father, Leroy, she is survived by her daughter, Crystal, and her son-in-law, Steven, who were her constant sources of pride and love. She was the beloved Grandma to her cherished grandchildren, Olivia and Nate, who brought her endless happiness and laughter. Jeannie is also survived by sisters, Bertie Hayes and her husband Wayne Reeder, Rachel McCormick, Cynthia Colman and her husband John, and her brother, Leroy Buddy Schaefer and his wife Carmen, along with many other relatives and friends.
Jeannie will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her infectious laughter, and her boundless love for her family and friends. Though her battle with cancer was long and difficult, she never allowed it to define her. Instead, she lived her life with grace, courage, and an unshakable belief in the power of hope.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many friends, caregivers, and medical professionals who supported Jeannie throughout her journey.
A celebration of Jeannie’s remarkable life will be held on January 11, 2025, at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78752, at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a Cancer Research Organization or a Charity of your choice, honoring Jeannie’s legacy of hope and strength.
Her light will forever shine in the hearts of those who loved her.
