The eyes and stars of Texas have smiled on this beloved native son. Jerry Dale Tapley, an only child, grew up living the “Cowboy Way” deep in the heart of South Texas. Guided by his core belief to “play fair, ride hard, and shoot straight,” Jerry lived a life full of purpose, adventure, and love.
Born in Pearsall, Texas, Jerry began his remarkable journey riding a pony to school each day. A true outdoorsman with a passion for the Western lifestyle, Jerry was a devoted Eagle Scout and the first member of his family to attend college. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin.
Jerry put himself through college working at KTBC where he was tapped to do everything from running cameras to producing the "Uncle Jay Show”. He then served his country as an Air Force photographer during the Vietnam War. After graduating from UT, Jerry began his professional career in St. Louis with the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, where he established their inaugural television studio. In 1974, 3M recruited him to build their television studio in St. Paul, Minnesota. He spent his remaining career with 3M working in a variety of marketing and communication roles. In 1989, Jerry eagerly accepted a new position in the Lone Star State as Group Marketing Communications Manager and moved his family back to Austin. He retired from 3M after 31 years.
Jerry’s zest for life was infectious. He believed in creating joy and laughter wherever he went. Whether donning a toga to discuss Greek and Roman history or dressing as a jockey for a Kentucky Derby party, Jerry’s unique outlook—“Cowboy Up”—infused every moment with delight and meaning. Many lucky young family members were treated to his prized collection of hats and costumes gathered during years of travel. He never met a story he couldn’t improve upon, bringing his signature humor and charm to every tale.
A vibrant member of the Austin community, Jerry’s contributions were numerous. He served as Commodore of the Austin Aqua Festival, held board positions at KLRU and the Ronald McDonald House, and volunteered in various capacities at Westlake United Methodist Church. For over 20 years, Jerry actively participated in UT OLLI’s Quest, taking on leadership roles such as Chair, Seminar Chair, Parliamentarian, and Seminar Director. His seminars were always popular whether he was bringing Austin’s history to life or waxing poetic on decades of Hollywood films.
Jerry found immense joy in skiing with his friends, his family, and especially his granddaughters, Caitlin and Jules. He also delighted in traveling and dancing with the love of his life, Sarah Burcham. Jerry met Sarah at UT in 1963 and, immediately and forever smitten, proposed on their third date. They married in 1967 and shared 57 incredible years filled with laughter, adventures, and unwavering devotion.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sarah, his son Doug, daughter-in-law Cynthia, and granddaughters Caitlin and Jules. His legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will forever inspire those who knew him.
A memorial service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 18th, at Westlake United Methodist Church. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Texas Oncology, with special thanks to Dr. Demetrius Loukas.
