Jim Leonard Menzies

Jim’s love of the outdoors began as a little boy. Jim rode his bicycle to the Guadalupe River and fished. On a good day he would bring dinner home in his bicycle basket. As he matured, he made many friends while fishing, but his favorite fishing partner was Donnie Hisle.

Jim enjoyed deer hunting with his friends and their children on the lease in West Texas for many years.

Jim had several priorities in life, and one was playing golf with his many friends at Balcones Country Club. He loved the game and he loved his golfing buddies. However, he liked the game even better, when at the age of 70 he made a hole in one!

Jim’s greatest enjoyment was football. His passion for football was discovered while playing football at Tivy High School. He was so excited to attend the Tivy reunions because Patsy made that event happen. He treasured each member of the 1968 class and talked to many on a weekly basis, friends for life.

Jim’s fondest memories was attending the University of Texas games with his best friend Happy Feller and Otto Sagebiel. The trio are lifelong Longhorn fans, who attended the games for over 30+ years together. But before that Jim and Otto watched Happy kick some critical field goals for the Longhorns!

Jim’s professional career began in the insurance business. A career he excelled because he enjoyed meeting people and instantaneously had a new friend. Jim thrived in helping people, he endeavored to fulfill his clients insurance needs. Jim received many awards and accolades and won vacations while representing different insurance companies through the years. However, what Jim treasured the most was the long friendships he established. He adored working with Jim Hogan and Tommy Eckols and many others at Guardian. Joe Kane and his family at Opes One Advisors he greatly valued. Jim had wonderful memories working with Eric Liljenwall and his wife Becky and their sons.

Jim had a close business and personal relationship with Wes Ritchie and the Ritchie family. Jim admired Wes, he would often seek his legal guidance, but also spiritual guidance from a trusted friend.

Jim Menzies is survived by his wife Mary Margaret Baldeschwiler. His brother Tom Menzies of San Antonio. His nieces, Dr. Anne Christian Gomez, Dr. Mary Christian Reed, Lauren Anglin, Bailey Baldeschwiler and one nephew Blaise Baldeschwiler. He is also survived by his brothers in law and sisters in law, Joan and Alan Curtis, Patty and Everett Anglin and Anne Christian.

Jim is also survived by the Feller family, Happy, Judy, Courtney and Candy who showered Jim with love, kindness and friendship for over fifty years. The Teledynamics family, Wendy Wagner, Tammy Tipler and Kevin Collier and all Happy’s employees. The highlight of every week, lunch with Happy and visiting all of the staff.

Jim had many friends, his hunting, fishing and golfing buddies, insurance associates and his treasured clients and his family are all grieving the loss of a wonderful, vibrant man. His life was an example of the true meaning of friendship. The light of our lives dimmed on May 11, 2020 with the loss of our beloved Jim Leonard Menzies, gone but never forgotten.
