Jimmy Somma—whose signature grin lit up any room and whose music left lasting echoes in the hearts of everyone he met—passed away suddenly on August 3, 2025. He was 56.
Born and raised by his adoring parents, James Somma and Mary Martucci Somma Fajvan, in West Orange, New Jersey, Jimmy’s love for music emerged early, a gift that would shape his life and the lives of countless others. He found his rhythm young, first with a guitar in his hands, and later through his unmatched talent for building custom amplifiers and guitars. His craftsmanship became legendary, trusted by thousands of musicians, including well-known acts like Earl Slick, Jason Isbell, Imagine Dragons and countless other guitar players across a wide swath of genres. He truly gave guitar players their voice.
In 2014, Jimmy made his way to Austin, Texas—a city that would become his home. There, he found not only a vibrant music scene, where he thrived as lead guitarist in The Larry Harris Band and most recently, Moving Blues, but also his soulmate, Anna Pittala.
Jimmy’s contributions reached far beyond the stage. A passionate activist for improving the world, he gave back to his community in creative ways -- including volunteering to register voters, adopting his neighborhood creek and building a labyrinth from recycled garden hoses to offer a space of calm and reflection for his neighbors. His kindness and generosity were boundless. Whether offering a helping hand, fixing a friend’s gear, or simply listening, Jimmy showed up for people—in big ways and small.
He was not just a musician. He was a connector. A dreamer. A loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, devoted partner, and friend.
Jimmy leaves behind his loving parents; Mary Martucci Somma Fajvan and James Somma; his beloved and devoted partner, Anna; his supportive stepdad, Michael Fajvan, his cherished sister, Christine Somma Hart; nephew Nathan and niece Ella; band mates and an immense circle of lifelong friends. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends from across the country—many of whom had the joy of reuniting with him recently at a family gathering in New Jersey.
He was a devoted cat dad, a fixer of all things musical, a builder of beautiful sounds and spaces, and a quiet hero in the lives of so many. Jimmy’s absence leaves an impossible void, but his spirit—his laugh, his music, his heart—will forever echo in every note played, every amplifier switched on, and every life he touched.
