Joan Dealey Ewen, beloved matriarch to 4 children, 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren, peacefully passed away on May 15, 2024, at home in Lakeway, Texas at the age of 93.
She was born in Santa Monica, California in 1931 to Samuel David Dealey and Edwina Vawter Dealey. Joan’s family expanded to include brother David and sister Barbara. It was a Navy family and Joan was raised in Honolulu, Pensacola, and New London, Connecticut among other locales. Her father, Sam, went on to become one of the most highly decorated Naval war heroes of the 2nd World War before losing his life in enemy action in 1944.
One summer, while visiting Sam’s relatives in Dallas, Joan met the love of her life, William Wood Ewen. They married in 1951 and, after a brief stint as an Army wife in France, she settled down in Texas to raise her family. After bearing 3 healthy sons, her fourth child was a beautiful girl named Lynda Lee. Joan and her husband Bill devoted the next 22 years of their lives caring for Lynda, who suffered from severe cerebral palsy. Their love and devotion to their daughter was an immense inspiration to family and friends.
After sending her 3 sons off to college, Joan was finally able to rekindle her artistic talents. Having majored in Art in college, she picked up her easel and paints and began producing striking acrylic and oil paintings, which were highly prized by family and friends. She sold many of her paintings over many years as a member of the Llano and Buchanan Dam art guilds. Joan loved to travel and she and Bill experienced many fabulous cruises throughout the world. Joan was an active member of the Lakeway community for the past 32 years.
In addition to her mother and father, Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bill, daughter Lynda, sister Barbara, and is survived by brother Dave (and Margaret) Dealey, sons William Ewen (and Holly Nash), Michael (and Susan) Ewen, James (and Brenda) Ewen, and the aforementioned grandchildren etc., all of whom will never forget the love and generosity she brought into their lives.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, Lakeway, on Sunday afternoon, July 7, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Remarks by family and friends will begin at 5 pm. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, United Cerebral Palsy, or March of Dimes in Joan’s name would be welcomed.
