-Grandpa Jim, modestly, 2003
Joan Sledd passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. She was born Joan Simmons Webb in Oxford, England on September 1, 1919. She married James Hinton Sledd of Atlanta, GA. on July, 16, 1939. They remained a devoted couple until he died in July, 2003. The couple had five children: Andrew, Robert, James Jr., John and Anne. James Jr. died from complications of childhood diabetes in 1986. Joan made the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation a favorite charity for the remainder of her life. The rest of her children survive and remember her with the deepest respect and affection, as do numerous relatives, especially her sister Marjorie, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Joan had ten grandchildren: Andrew Sledd Jr., Rachel Iannantuoni, Rebecca Williams, Glenn Sledd, Mary Sledd, James Thomas Sledd, Claire Joan Sledd, Michael Sledd, Austin Sledd-Vijil and Michael Boyle. They have presented her with eleven great-grandchildren: Chloe Sledd, Andrew Sledd III, Savannah Sledd, Sophia Sledd, Skylar Sledd, Rocco Iannantuoni, Jackson Williams, Dylan Williams, Brennan Williams, Satya Morgan and Kimi Boyle. All but the very youngest of these twenty- one descendants will always recall Grandma Joan’s patience and kindness with a happy smile.
Joan was an almost tireless wife, mother and grandparent. She dedicated her life to the care of her family. Insofar as they have learned, in turn, how to love, she was surely their best teacher.
The Funeral Service will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 3rd of April, in the Davis Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd. Austin, Texas, with the interment to follow at Austin Memorial Park, Austin, Texas.
