Born to Wilton W. Kullenberg Sr. and Joan Holland Gibbs, at St. David's Hospital in Austin, Texas. He later changed his last name to that of his step-father and became John Gibbs. John graduated from Habersham Central High School in Cornelia, Georgia and went on to attend college at the University of Georgia. He later moved back to Texas, first to Bryan, then to the Houston area and eventually came to live in Austin. After years in retail, John went back to school and graduated from Austin Community College with an Associate Degree in Radiology. At the end of his life, he was working in the hospital that brought him into this world. John was a musician, a sometime luthier, and a philosopher with a sly sense of humor. He will be remembered for his love of learning, his love of music and the love he gave his family and friends. He is survived by his mother Joan H. Gibbs, his older brother W. Walter Kullenberg, Jr., his younger brothers Ronald and Reagan Gibbs, several half-feral neighborhood cats and a room full of stringed instruments. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who took care of John, and those visited and gave him comfort in his last days. A Memorial Service will be held at six o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 25th of August, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road Suite 100, Austin, Texas, 78759.
