
John Bender Longenecker of Austin, Texas passed away November 16, 2009. He was born in Salunga, PA on July 8, 1930 to Earl Bender Longenecker and Florence Way Longenecker. He was preceded in death by both parents and his daughter Karen Longenecker. He is survived by his wife, Myrna, daughter, Luanne Gytri and her husband John, and four grandchildren, Catharine Ahls, Caroline Ahls, Donald Gytri, and Julia Gytri. John (Jack) graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, and from there went on to earn a Masters and Doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught Nutrition at the University of Texas at Austin for 35 years and then served as the Director of The Institute of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 15 years. He was Professor Emeritus at both Universities, as well as a Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition. Those who knew him will always remember his intelligence, compassion, and great love for his family. He will be sorely missed as a husband, father, grandfather, colleague and friend. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Weed- Corley-Fish Funeral Home located at 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78705. The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to Odyssey Hospice Austin for their care. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
