

John Oppermann, age 78, of Austin passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 after a brief illness. John was born in Galveston, Texas on October 29, 1938 to Gus John III and Katherine Oppermann. He graduated from St Edward’s University in Austin in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce. He then enlisted in the U S Air Force and after serving his country he moved his family to Austin in 1969 where he worked for Abel Stationers for many years until their closure.
He and his wife, Margaret, then went into business for themselves and ran Oppermann Stationers until his retirement. Upon retirement, John, went back to work at both The Lightbulb Shop as an outside salesman for many years and the Dell Diamond until he could no longer work. John never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. He was very involved in St Louis King of France Catholic Church since 1969 and attended mass each morning until his health declined.
Mr. Oppermann is survived by four brothers Gus (Corinne), Ted (Juanita), Bob (Deanna) and Joe (Langdon); his children Darrell (Leticia), Wayne , Steve and Charlie; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren as well as many beloved nieces and nephews and his former wife, Margaret.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Neil, Andrew and John and nephews Gus David V, Paul and nephew and Godson Bob Jr.
A viewing will be held at 5:00 pm with a Rosary being said at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78752. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am Thursday, November 10th, 2016 at St Louis King of France Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78757 with Father James Misko presiding.
