Dr. Vineyard was my doctor from 1972 until he retired.  I remember the framed quote over his desk.  Can’t remember verbatim but it said “as he lives his life he wanted to make a difference in other lives”.  He did make a difference in my life.   A great encourager.  I always liked talking with him at his desk.  I was a young man and he helped with good of common sense to apply in my young life.  When I  received the letter about his retirement I was sad but happy for him.   Just learned of his passing and am confident he is now at the right hand of God.

My wife Nelle, was in the last class at Seton School of Nursing.  She was Dr. Vineyard's nurse at the Austin Diagnostic Clinic in the late 60's.  When she died unexpectedly in 1969, Dr Vineyard helped me and my then 3 year old son, Rusty, through a very difficult period.  We lived in his home for a few months until I was able to find a place to live and employment after processing out of the Navy.   In the 90's he became my primary care physician until his retirement.  I have many other good memories of him as a physician and a person.  I am saddened by his passing.  May the Lord bless his children and family at this difficult time.

I got to know Pete about 1961 at UT Southwestern Medical School, where he, as a young faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine, met weekly with a small group of us junior medical students for a semester to discuss infectious diseases.  He was fun and not intimidating, as were many of the older faculty--he was more "one of us" and "not one of them."  A couple of years later I was home from the Air Force visiting my parents and telephoned my father's internist, Dr. Henry Renfert, and was greeted by the receptionist's "Drs. Renfert, Lawliss, Sayers, Goehrs & Vineyard. " I was delighted to find Pete had moved to Austin and joined those other four esteemed physicians, but that long phone moniker soon gave way to "Austin Diagnostic Clinic."  I'm happy to say Pete contributed to my medical education and more importantly to the Austin medical community as a founder of Austin Diagnostic Clinic and as physician to many in our city.  We who were privileged to know Pete will miss him!

We became patients of Dr. Vineyard in 1966 when he was a part of the Austin Diagnostic Clinic.  My husband needed a doctor due to a serious respiratory problem.  We had a two year old son so called our pediatrician, Dr. Cohn for a recommendation.  How fortunate we were because he recommended Dr. Vineyard.  He remained our doctor until we received his unexpected letter that he was retiring!   No time to make an early appointment for our annual.  Life changed.  We did find another physician but it was never the same.  Having the same doctor for 34 years was not only comforting but he also kept us well and provided outstanding care.  He always met with us in his office prior to our physical exam and then another appointment a week later to go over the exam/test results.  A small office but filled with lots of momentos, pictures and windmills AND stacks of paper on various chairs.  He said "if it isn't on the floor I've told the cleaning folks to leave it alone".  He was "one of a kind" and we miss him.  Our sympathy to his family.  

August 1990, this was a long time ago. I don't remember who recommended to me that I consult Dr. John Vineyard, but my angel was definitively watching over me. I still have the phone number Dr. Vineyard had in 1990: 512.459.6503. He quickly and accurately diagnosed my stage 4 colon cancer Adenocarcinoma of the colon, metastatic to the liver), and Thanks to Dr. Vineyard, and to my oncologist, Dr. John Doty, I am still alive today. I found Dr. Vineyard to be attentive to my needs, bold (yet soft), caring, competent, compassionate, confident, ethical, friendly, knowledgeable, sensitive, and trustworthy. I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Vineyard passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Two memories——Pete had a great voice and would sing old commercials and silly songs from his youth when we’d go on road trips or run errands.  I loved those songs and asked him to sing them often.  I’m going to miss those songs and Pete!!!
I also remember once when Pete complained that his right shoe felt too tight and that his foot hurt all during mass.  When he took his shoe off, he discovered that he had left the shoehorn in his shoe and had wore it to church like that!  I couldn’t stop laughing, but he didn’t think it was very funny.  I still laugh when I think about it.  I love you Pete!  You were a good stepdad!  R.I.P. and I’ll see you again someday.♥️
