

Dr. Joseph Vincent Hayden (“Joe”) died at his home in Austin, Texas surrounded by his family on February 6, 2018. Joe was born on November 30, 1926 in Bayonne, New Jersey to Joseph and Helen Hayden (nee Sheridan) and graduated from St. Peter's Preparatory School, Jersey City, New Jersey. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, New Jersey in 1947 at the age of 20. He graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1951. More recently, he resided in Boynton Beach, Florida and Grantham, New Hampshire before relocating to Austin, Texas.
After serving as an intern at City Hospital, Newark, New Jersey from 1951-1952, he served as a medical- officer, lieutenant, in the United States Navy from 1952-1954. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn from 1954-1957. From 1957-1958, Joe served as an Instructor of Internal Medicine at Seton Hall Medical School in South Orange, New Jersey. He married Patricia Ann Neary of Freeport, New York in 1958 and they settled in Demarest and then Pennington, New Jersey. He practiced internal medicine in New Jersey until his retirement.
Joe possessed a keen intellect but never forgot his humble beginnings. As a young man, he grew up watching the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. He taught himself carpentry and plumbing and learned how to lay brick from his father-in-law. He loved history and architecture. Along with his wife, Pat, he loved a wide range of music-from classical and Broadway musicals to big band and operettas.
Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia ("Patsy") Ann Hayden (nee Neary), daughters, Rose Ann Hayden of Austin, Texas, Mary Helen Hayden of Barre, Vermont, Eileen Patricia Hayden of Austin, Texas, Ann Marie Hayden and husband Andrew Creighton of Los Angeles, California, son Patrick Joseph Hayden of Concord, New Hampshire and grandson, Hayden Michael Covert of Austin, Texas.
Funeral arrangements are through Cook Walden, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752, (512) 454-5611. A Mass of Redemption will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 4311 Small Drive, Austin, Texas on February 9, 2018.
