Born in Utica, NY to Margaret and Anthony McEvoy, she was one of five children. Julie received her degree as a Registered Nurse from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam, NY. While in school she met the love of her life, Frank Peters, and they married a year later in 1948.
Following their marriage, the couple moved to New Jersey to begin their family. They settled in Mendham, NJ where they lived for more than 30 years and raised their eight children with much wisdom, parental advice and love. Julie’s love of life and commitment to service was evident in all she did. Her voice was beautiful and she could be heard singing throughout the family home as she made it warm and welcoming. She was an active gardener and talented seamstress, making everything from slipcovers to clothing. Her great sense of style and eye for color and fabrics were always evident.
Julie was actively involved in her community. She served as a lector at St Joseph’s Catholic Church and was instrumental in establishing the Senior Citizen Center in Mendham. She was a fantastic cook, avid reader, and engaging conversationalist with a contagious laugh. She was ahead of her time with her focus on healthy eating and exercise and served as role model for family and friends. Julie and Frank were great dancers, always the last to leave the dance floor. They loved playing bridge with their friends and neighbors.
When the youngest of her children reached school age, Julie went back to school earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Jersey City State College in 1973. She then began her career as a School Nurse at Littleton Elementary School in Parsippany, NJ where for 15 years she loved the children and they loved her.
In 1988 Julie and Frank moved to Austin, TX and fully immersed themselves in their new community. Julie volunteered at Seton Hospital, served meals to the homeless, was a Eucharistic minister, active member of the Theresians women’s prayer group and American Association of University Women , and President of New Neighbors of Northwest Austin for several years. Julie and Frank traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad, visited their children and grandchildren wherever they lived, and through their new hobby of bicycle club touring visited many countries in Europe.
Julie and Frank were excited to be part of the original residents of Longhorn Village in 2009. She quickly immersed herself in her new community serving on the Welcoming Committee, Green Team, Library Committee, and of course, playing bridge.
Julie will be deeply missed by Frank, her loving husband of 69 years, daughters Julianne and Meg, sons Chris and daughter-in-law Michelle, Brian and daughter-in-law Marianne, Kevin, Tim, Tony, Chip and daughter-in-law Sirikarn, twelve grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Julie will always be remembered for her warm smile and way of making others feel loved and welcome. We extend heartfelt thanks to family and friends for their support and caring as we mourn the loss of this special lady who was such an integral part of all our lives.
