Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania in 1951, her parents, Bernard and Lucy Petrovich, and older brother Jack, expected a late May birth, but in taking her time to arrive until the new month, June’s name was chosen for her by the calendar.
In 1978 June married Jeffrey David Bloch (z”l) and soon after, with their cat Dusty and dog Pepper in tow, drove down to Austin to lay down roots. There, they started Bloch & Co. Prescription Footwear. June was happy to leave cold weather and snow behind.
A lifelong lover of animals, June worked as a veterinary technician. Those experiences informed her care for animals throughout her life. Her longest career was at the McCallum High School library, working there until her retirement in 2019. Seeing students thrive in the library was one of her great joys of going to work every day.
June was a devoted and compassionate mother to her daughter, Lindsey Ann Bloch. The two were inseparable throughout their life together. When Lindsey met her husband, Jonathan Poritsky, June agreed to the pairing on one condition: that it not disrupt “Mom Sunday,” a weekly day of shopping, lunch and spending time with one another. The tradition was never broken—sometimes Jonathan was even invited.
June’s happiest place in recent years has been her wingback chair, where her cat, Latke, would sit just above her head watching Jeopardy! or Wheel of Fortune with Lindsey by her side.
June was kind, warmhearted and, above all else, honest. She never said anything she didn’t mean, choosing her words wisely at every turn. She cared deeply for her family, and any friend of Lindsey’s became part of that family.
June was 71. May her memory be a blessing.
The family will hold a private memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Austin Public Library through the form below or by contacting Laura Polio: [email protected], 512–974–9624.
