Leonardo Joseph Cadena, known affectionately as Leo to his friends and loved ones, completed his earthly journey on a day graced with the same warmth, peace, and quiet strength that he brought into the lives of all who knew him. Born on March 29, 1958, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Leo lived his life as a steady beacon of joy, faith, and perseverance. His journey ultimately led him to Austin, Texas, where he was called home, leaving behind a legacy rich in love, laughter, service, and unwavering trust in God.
Leo was a cherished son of the late Martina and Domingo Cadena and a beloved brother to his sister, Olivia Gomez, who preceded him in glory. His light continues to shine through his devoted brother, Rey Cadena, and his loving sister, Priscilla Martinez, who will carry his memory forward with every step they take.
Leo was deeply devoted to his family and is survived by his beloved wife, Luz Cadena, whose love, partnership, and faith were the heart of his home. Together, they built a life anchored in love, prayer, and shared purpose. He was a proud and loving father to Cherie Cadena Hodson (David), Marissa Johnson (David), and Joseph Cadena, delighting in every milestone and moment spent together. Leo found profound joy in being a grandfather to Sofia, Adley, Ezri, Benjamin, and Samuel, whose lives were brightened by his gentle wisdom, playful humor, and unconditional love.
A man of great intellect and boundless curiosity, Leo’s academic pursuits culminated in a Master’s of Science in Technology Commercialization—a testament to his passion for innovation and purposeful progress. His professional life was marked by more than two decades of dedicated service at IBM. His time at VISA was equally meaningful, and upon his departure, he courageously stepped forward in faith to establish a successful project management business, guided by diligence, integrity, and vision.
Leo’s faith in Christ was the cornerstone of his life. It shaped his character, guided his decisions, and infused his days with hope. Through both spoken words and quiet actions, he inspired others to seek a deeper relationship with the Lord and to trust in God’s plan, even when the road ahead seemed long.
That same perseverance was evident in Leo’s love of running. What began as a personal challenge grew into a lifelong passion that reflected his disciplined spirit and joyful determination. Leo proudly completed several marathons, embracing each race as both a physical test and a spiritual journey—one step, one mile, one prayer at a time. Running was his time of reflection, gratitude, and communion with God, mirroring the way he lived his life: steady, committed, and always moving forward with purpose.
Coaching soccer was not merely a pastime for Leo; it was a calling. On the field, he taught far more than the fundamentals of the game. He modeled teamwork, perseverance, humility, and integrity, shaping young lives with patience and encouragement. He was a constant presence at his children’s events, cheering them on with a joy and pride that radiated unmistakable love.
Leo’s love for travel reflected his awe for God’s magnificent creation, and his joy in gardening was his way of nurturing life and honoring the beauty of growth and renewal. His days were filled with faith-filled conversations, gentle humor, and stories that could bring a smile to even the weariest heart.
Leo’s life was truly a race well run, a faith well kept, and a love generously shared. Today, we celebrate Leonardo Joseph Cadena not with hearts weighed down by loss, but with deep gratitude for the gift of his life and the countless ways he reflected God’s love to those around him. We take comfort in the promise that guided his faith and anchored his hope. His favorite bible verse was John 3:16.
*“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
The family extends their deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate care team at Suncrest Hospice, whose kindness, dignity, and unwavering support brought comfort and peace during Leo’s final days. Special thanks are given to Swan Song, CNAs Rob and Christina, Nurses Elaine, Brandy, and Sara, Music Therapist Lathe, Massage Therapist Teresa, and Social Worker Beth whose gentle presence and dedicated care were true blessings.
The family is also profoundly thankful for the love, prayers, and steadfast support of dear friends Jerry and Sandy Hodge, Keith and Maureen Carter, Machell Lewis, Tamara, Pastor Ray of Central City Church, Kathie and Levi Randolph, Jim and Karen Icenhower and Carly, and the many others who provided meals, encouragement, and helping hands throughout Leo’s illness.
