

Dr. Leonid Danilovich Karpov, 61, of Austin, Texas, passed away February 22, 2013 after suffering a stroke. He was born in Russia May 14, 1951 to Daniil Karpov and Anna Romanova. He was educated at Krasnoyarsk Polytechnic Institute (B.S., Electronics), Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute and Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (Ph.D., Physics and Mathematics).
Leonid was recognized as a pioneer in the field of vacuum microelectronics. He was Chief of the Vacuum Microelectronics Laboratory and Senior Lecturer in the Radioelectronics Department at Krasnoyarsk Polytechnical Institute in Russia. In 1993, he made the first U.S. public showing of a monolithic field emission display, came to the U.S. in 1994 at the invitation of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and worked for nearly two decades in the field of vacuum electronics. He served since 2008 as Director of Vacuum Nanoelectronics at Xidex Corporation in Austin, where he made important contributions to the company s success.
Leonid was revered and respected as much for his kindness and consideration of others as for his scientific accomplishments. He is fondly remembered by his co-workers and scientific colleagues as a faithful friend who was always ready to offer a cheerful word of encouragement and lend a helping hand.
Leonid is survived by his wife Larissa, sons Sasha (11) and Leonid (18), and daughter Anna (34), of Austin.
A funeral with follow up gathering of family and friends will be held at Holy Protection Orthodox Church, 1701 Peridot Road, Pflugerville, TX 78660, at 11am, Thursday, February 28th, 2013. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2nd, 2013, 1-4 pm at the family's residence, 2308 Bent Bow Drive, Cedar Park, Texas 78613.
