

Louise Jarrell Louise Jarrell age 98, a longtime resident of Austin, died on May 12, 2004. She was born in LaPine, Louisiana, and was the daughter of the late Marland Amos and Lula Head Jarrell. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she obtained her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Miss Jarrell was an employee of the Austin Independent School District. She began her career as a classroom teacher, but was appointed to the position of counselor with the inception of the Counseling and Guidance Program in the Austin Public Schools. She held this position in Allan and O. Henry Junior High Schools for most of her tenure. She retired in 1973. Miss Jarrell was active in the educational organizations serving in the offices of Secretary and President of the Austin Classroom Teachers Association. She served as board member of Mathews Community School and was a member of the original state committee appointed to define the role of the counselor in the public schools of Texas. Miss Jarrell was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Austin Retired Teachers Association, the Austin Womans Club, Pan American Round Table, and the Zeta Tau Alpha alumnae chapter. Miss Jarrells professional awards include: Counselor of the Year, North Central Personnel and Guidance Association and School Counselors Association; Certificate for Meritorious Service in Education and Guidance Counseling; Texas House of Representatives; Outstanding Woman in Community Development, American Association of University Women; Certificate of Merit and Honor Cup Awards, National Zeta Tau Alpha and Austin Alumnae Chapter. Miss Jarrell is survived by her sister, Mona Jarrell; nephews, Dr. W.M. (Jerry) Jarrell, and wife Ann, Tomball, Texas, Michael S. Jarrell and wife, Ginny, Dallas, Texas; nieces, Mrs. Mary Kathryn McGowen and husband, Joseph, Jonesboro, Texas, Mrs. Marguerite Kelly Luedeke and husband, James, Austin, Texas and great nephews and nieces; Staff Sgt. John Jarrell, USMC, and wife Kelly, Suzanne and Jon Peters, Dr. Kalen Pieper, Thomas and Jeanette Pieper, Susannah and Kevin Edwards, Kelly and Chris Harris, Cpt. Kirk Luedeke, US Army, and wife Suzanne; and Sandra Mercado. The family would like to deeply thank Janice Gaines and Victoria Gyorgy for their loving care of Louise during her long illness. Special gratitude goes to the seventh floor staff and Hospice at Seton Hospital for treating Louise with such love and dignity during her last days. The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 14, 2004 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Austin Memorial Park with Reverend Kathleen Jones officiating. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity of your choice.
