

Loyd Powell, Sr., was the tenth child born to Oliver and Eliza Powell on February 19, 1937, in Saint Maurice, Louisiana, Winn Parish.He confessed Christ at an early age. Loyd joined The Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church and was an active member of the Seniors Ministry. He looked forward to Sunday service and enjoyed hearing the word preached by his pastor. Under Pastor Mays’ leadership, although shy, he grew in the word and continued to read his Bible even when his health was failing. He was blessed with the gift to quote scriptures.His journey continued on in this walk of faith, and he married the love of his life, Mary Lee, whom he fondly referred to as Babe, Honey, and Blab. The couple married and later moved to Texas to raise their children. Loyd was very protective of his family and worked hard to ensure that they had a good life. He loved his extended family, and he was always willing to offer a helping hand to those seeking a better life.Loyd was a skilled builder and mathematician. He worked in construction for several years and finished his career as a foreman, retiring from LH Builders in 1999. In his spare time, he enjoyed using his hands, and he was a light of the community by offering his skills to help others. His warm and caring personality made him well respected and loved by many. He enjoyed listening to music, fishing, crossword puzzles and spending time with his family and friends. Loyd was a loving father, husband, brother, uncle and friend.On September 7, 2018, he gained his wings and claimed his seat in the arms of our God. He is preceded in death by his parents and ten siblings, Anna, Kizzi, Gertrude, Edward, W.T., Thelma, Robert Oliver, Emily, Hattie and Roberta. He has one surviving sister, Dorothy Brown of Tacoma, Washington.He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Lee Powell; four children, Sheila McKinney of Austin, Texas, Edna Ann Childs of Pflugerville, Texas, Loyd Powell, Jr., of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lakisha Powell of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Willie McKinney IV, Jeremy D. Watson, Elizabeth Raisa Childs, and Shi-Ann Powell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
