Margaret was born in Austin, Texas. She is best known for her activism and commitment to the Austin and Travis County area. In 1970, she worked for the Austin Housing Authority overseeing three city housing projects: Santa Rita Courts, Chalmers Court, and Booker T. Washington Terrace.
In 1983 Margaret was the first Mexican American woman to seek an Austin City Council position. She was active in getting Food Stamp Programs organized and helped establish the South Austin Recreation Center while serving as a board member. From the late 70's to early 80's, Margaret engaged herself in the Democratic Party. She served as an Election Judge, a member of Mexican American Business and Professional Women Association (MAPWA) and Texas Women's Political Caucus for the Mexican American Democrats. She served on countless community organizations and associations dedicated to future generations.
Margaret was strong in her faith and a devout member of St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Casimiro and Rose Uriegas; daughter, Regina Rose Ruiz; grandson, John Michael Ruiz; sisters, Gloria A. Corona and Rose Marie Marquez.
Margaret is survived by her sons, Jovanni Michele Ruiz (wife Terry), Paul Rene Ruiz (wife Deborah); daughter, Kristina Marie Cruz (husband Rudy). She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Memorial Rosary will be 7:00 pm, Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 2620 S. Congress, Austin, Texas.
Memorial Mass will be 10:00 am, Friday, December 21, 2018 at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf, Austin, Texas.
