Mark was born in Berkley, California on November 2, 1959. He grew up in Abilene, Texas graduating from Cooper High School in 1977 where he played on the golf team. In 1981, he graduated from Baylor University with a degree in economics. After moving to Austin in 1983, Mark was involved in several investment firms including Capitol Securities, Morgan Keegan, Hester Capital Management, and most recently, Atlantic Trust.
In 1990, he married Rebecca Ellen Lee of Dallas whom he loved from the moment he met her. Mark and Becky have three children: Madison age 20, Boone age 18, and John Luke age 12. Madison was his princess. He loved spending time with her and would take her on regular date nights that he would plan in advance. With his sons, Boone and John Luke, he loved to share adventures, like hunting, fishing and snow skiing. They also shared his passion for the game of golf and had many great adventures playing the courses he loved both near and far away. Through these experiences and everyday life, Mark successfully modeled how to be a true gentlemen to the sons he cherished. He was also passionate about Baylor Bears sports and enjoyed watching and attending games with Becky and the kids…Sic Em’! Mark really enjoyed some of the more simple things of life; like taking care of their dogs and preparing one of the four meals that he mastered over his adult life.
Mark also modeled generosity in his long-time service and commitment to numerous charitable and civic organizations, including: Dell Children’s Medical Center (trustee); The First Tee of Greater Austin (board member); Knights of the Symphony (treasure); Admirals Club (member); Bachelors Club (member); the YMCA of Austin (board member), and Young Life (local advisory board member). Powell was recently elected to serve on the national board of the Young Life Foundation in Colorado.
An avid golfer, Mark was a member of several golf clubs where he enjoyed spending time with his sons and friends. He and his friends went on many memorable trips to courses such as Sand Hills Golf Club in Nebraska, Loch Lomond Golf Club in Scotland, Preston Trails Golf Club in Dallas and his favorite, Austin Golf Club, where he is a founding member.
Mark was known for his writing abilities, which he honed while at Baylor University. His writings include thoughts on the economy and financial markets along with humorous writings mostly about and between friends that are now priceless gifts.
Stanley Mark Powell is a believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He participated in the baptism of each of his children and humbly celebrated each of their decision to follow Jesus Christ. He and Becky have attended a number of churches over many years in Austin, including Grace Covenant Church, First Evangelical Free Church, Austin Bible Church and Austin Stone.
He is survived by his loving and loyal wife of 22 years, Becky, their children: Madison, Boone and John Luke. He is also survived by his parents, Peggy and Boone Powell, Jr. of Dallas; his sister Crystal Colombo of Dallas and Cari Kelemen and her husband Russ Kelemen of Dallas; his parents-in-law, Ellen and Alfred Lee of Houston; his sister-in-law and her husband, Mary Beth and John Arcidiacono of Houston; his brother-in-law, Johnny Lee of Houston; and nieces and nephews: Cooper, Cassie, and Catie Kelemen, Grace Colombo, Christopher, Joey, and Allie Arcidiacono, and Trey Lee. He is now joined in Heaven with his nephew Johnny Arcidiacono.
