friend.
She attended Sweetwater High School and, while there, played the saxophone in The
Mustang Band. She also enjoyed playing the piano for fun. She was a member of the
Sweetwater Calvario Baptist Church and the Girl Scouts of America in her youth.
After graduating high school, she was accepted into her chosen nursing program and became
a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked 49 years of her life in this demanding field, where her
care and compassion for others was deeply appreciated and needed. 25 of those years were
dedicated to Austin Retirement and Nursing Center, from which she retired in 2014.
Her adult life was shaped by her dedication to her family, her faith and devotion to God, and
the small pleasures that can be found in the daily tasks that nurture ourselves and others - like
cooking, (attempts at) gardening, and reading. She took great pleasure in watching and
listening to the Sunday sermons conducted by her grandson, Clint, at First Baptist Church
Riesel.
Martha is survived by her daughters: Amy, Kim, and Toni; as well as by her siblings: Lita,
Sammy, and Danny.
She was “Grammy” to all of her grandchildren and loved (and was very loved by) them all. Her
grandchildren include: Charli and her husband John, Alexandra and her husband Justin, Ashley
and her husband Clint, Nathan and his spouse Jennifer, Christopher, and Kaeden. Her love for
her grandchildren was multiplied through her great-grandchildren: Elia, Emma, Smith, Eisley,
Shiloh, and Ellesyn.
Martha’s beloved nieces (Dana, Gina, Nikki, and Mia) and nephews (Angel, Sammy Jr., Adon,
Andres, and Nicolas), as well as her in-laws (Dr. Larry, Patricia, and Hope), and son-in-law
(John) were happily included in the circle of the people she loved best.
She is preceded in death by her nephew, Daniel Maldonado; father, Manuel Reyna; mother,
Alicia Reyna; and husband, Roger Smith.
The heavy weight of our grief at her passing is lightened by the knowledge that she is at peace
now and with the loved ones she has been missing on Earth. There are no words to
encompass the depth of our feelings for this wonderful person who we will continue to miss for
the rest of our lives. But we hope it will suffice to simply say that we love her and will hold her
forever in our hearts.
God bless her for all she did for us.
