

Marvin Dean Powell, retired Austin Firefighter passed away August 11, 2006, three days before his 83rd birthday. Dean was born in Houston, Texas, August 14, 1923 to Ellis Marvin Powell and Kate Elinor McCall Powell. Dean is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verda Mae Dungan Powell; son, Randy Powell; son, Gerald Powell and wife Tina; grandchildren, Cody, Allison, Brian, and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Clara and Logan; brother, Vincent Charby Powell and wife Georgia; sister, Gloria Mae Powell Phillips and husband Doug. Dean graduated from Austin High School in 1942 and soon afterwards joined the United States Navy. At the end of the World War II, he was given an Honorable Discharge with rank of First Class Petty Officer. Soon after his military service, he was accepted to become an Austin Firefighter, where he served proudly for 34 years, retiring in 1980 with rank of Lieutenant. Dean enjoyed his life with Verda and shared many interests including baseball, gardening, genealogy, collecting, and he was one heck of a ping pong player. The family would like to extend thanks to M.D. Anderson Hospital and CTMC Hospice of San Marcos for their help and support. Visitation for Dean will be held Monday, August 14, 2006 from 7:00 9:00 P.M. at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress. A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Ridgeway Cemetery, on Hwy 21, just south of Hwy 290 E. (toward Bastrop) in Paige, TX.
