Born to Eliud Muturi and Rose Chausiku, Mary grew up in Kenya, where she faced humble beginnings with unwavering grace and determination. Through perseverance and a deep-rooted faith, she overcame many challenges, eventually marrying the late Sammy Karimi Gathua. Together, they shared a devoted, faith-filled marriage grounded in love, resilience, and mutual respect.
Mary was a lifelong educator at heart, a dedicated teacher, mentor, and sponsor to many. She was known for her passion for learning, her love of books, and her natural ability to teach in every setting. She inspired countless lives through her wisdom, her patience, and her deep desire to see others succeed.
She was called “Mom” by many who adored her around the world; from students and family friends to neighbors and fellow travelers. And she, in turn, loved them all with an endless heart, always offering warmth, counsel, and prayer without hesitation.
Above all, Mary was a loving and steadfast matriarch. She poured herself into her family with immeasurable devotion, ensuring that every child and grandchild felt deeply loved, seen, heard, and guided. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, prayer, and wisdom.
Mary also had a remarkable sense of adventure. She explored the world - by land and sea - with open eyes, a wide smile, and an open heart, embracing new cultures and experiences with joy and gratitude. Even closer to home, she never missed an opportunity to explore - whether it was a scenic drive, a quiet nature trail, or a community event, she approached every day with curiosity and wonder.
She was blessed with five children: Peter Munene, Paul Muturi, Caroline Wangui, Patrick Mwangi, and Irene Muthoni. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Eric, Nicole, Max, Nkosi, Luke, Hannah, and Penelope - each one a source of pride and joy. Loving sister to the late Margret Njeri, late Grace Nagra, Sophia Muthoni, the late Stephen Miano, Shadrack Muliwa, Joseph muhia, Titus Mwaliga, and the late Lydia Njoki. She was also an aunt and great aunt to many who loved her dearly.
Later in life, Mary moved to Austin, Texas, where she remained actively engaged with her family and community. Her presence was felt deeply in every conversation, every prayer, and every quiet act of love.
Mary’s legacy is one of faith, love, service, learning, and wonder. Her spirit lives on in the lives of those she nurtured, mentored, inspired, and prayed for. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy that will continue to echo for generations.
Her favorite scripture:
“Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever.”
- Psalm 112:1–3
