Mary Barrett Stevens, age 8, of Austin, Texas, left to be with the Lord on Friday, July 4, 2025. Affectionately known as “May May” by those closest to her, Mary Barrett, was born on the 6th of December 2016, in Houston, Texas. She was the beloved daughter of Stacy and Johnny Stevens, and an extraordinary big sister to her brother Graham and sister Lilly. She endlessly doted on her dog, Pete.
Mary Barrett was a radiant light in the world who lived life with enthusiasm, curiosity, compassion, confidence and the purest joy. There was a magnetic energy about her that drew people in; she was a natural leader, someone others instinctively wanted to be near. She showed love, inclusivity and kindness to everyone she met. Mary Barrett was a child who lived life to the fullest — she wanted to participate in every activity, and attend any and all events —time held no bounds. She loved everything from art to basketball, dance to skiing and all that could be found in between. She was the most unique child and wise beyond her years. Always bringing her family along for the ride, Mary Barrett never stopped trying new things with the utmost excitement. She was bold, brave, stubborn and creative. She loved playing Rummikub and cards with her family, dancing with friends, and discovering all that God’s Earth has to offer. She had a laugh that was contagious, a witty sense of humor and was everything that is good and right. Her radiant smile, the sparkle in her eyes and her unwavering loyalty will live with us forever.
Mary Barrett attended school at Highland Park Elementary and is forever a loyal Scottie. She enjoyed traveling, and her favorite place - second only to home - was surrounded by her family and friends in Telluride, Colorado. She loved an adventure and was beyond excited to attend her first summer at Camp Mystic and achieve her dream of becoming a True Tonk.
Mary Barrett was deeply loved by those who preceded her in death. She is survived by her parents Stacy and Johnny Stevens, brother, Graham and sister, Lilly; grandparents Ann and Edward Stevens, Patti and William Holmes; Aunt Maggie and Uncle Sam McNichols, cousin, Juliet; along with Great Aunt and Uncle Cynthia and Peter Sullivan and their children; God Parents Emily and William Bellomy.
Services will be held at 1:30PM, Saturday, July 19, 2025, at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Austin, Texas. The family has requested that all attendees wear red or pink to honor Mary Barrett’s favorite colors. Children are welcome to attend the service.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the entire Camp Mystic staff, first responders, the Austin and Hill Country communities, and to our dear friends and family.
“A bell is not a bell until you ring it. A song is not a song until you sing it. The love in your heart was not put there to stay. Love is not love until you give it away.” - Oscar Hammerstein II, “The Sound of Music”
