

Mattaliene Eugenia Edgar Butler age 91, went to be with her Lord on Saturday October 23, 2010 at St. David’s hospital in Austin Texas. Mattaliene was born September 21, 1919 in Eustace, Texas to Matthew Elijah Edgar and Annie Eunice Oliver.
Mattaliene graduated from Eustace High School in 1937, and moved to Austin to attend Mayfair Taylor Business School and Daughns Business College. Mattaliene worked for the Texas Legislature and in the State Campaign headquarters. Mattaliene also worked at the Athens, Texas courthouse. During World War II Mattaliene worked as Secretary to the Colonel and other Doctors at Brooks General Hospital in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Mattaliene also enjoyed working for the Texas Department of Public welfare for 13 years and was an experienced writer in short-hand.
Mattaliene married William Bryan Butler in Austin, Texas on March 23, 1964.
Mr. and Mrs. Butler moved to Uvalde, Texas in 1971. Mattaliene attended the First Baptist Church of Uvalde and held office in the Eastern Star and other numerous civic organizations. Mr. and Mrs. Butler enjoyed countless trips to Merdano's Restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. Butler were married for 48 years prior to his death on December 23, 2009.
Matteliene portrayed strength and a friendly smile to those whom she came in contact with. Matt’s sense of humor was contagious, and her special laugh was coveted by many family and friends. Mattaliene “Nana” never complained and made the best out of every situation. Mattaliene always found the good in people and encouraged friends and family to enjoy “today” and not worry about tomorrow, or yesterday. Mattaliene encouraged her family to trust in the Lord and rely on His strength. Mattaliene loved sharing her story of taking flying lessons and prided herself in knowing how to fly an airplane.
Mattliene was preceded in death by her parents Matthew and Annie Edgar, brother Mike(Mac) Edgar, sister Dorothy Shriver Wharton, brother Wylie Oliver “Pete” Edgar, and husband William Bryan Butler.
Mattaline is survived by brother Richard Edgar of Austin and wife Lovie, daughter Sue Cervenka Sherman of Austin, son Danny Butler and wife Jeannie of San Antonio, grandson Robert “Little Joe” Jackson and wife Leslie, of Austin, grandsons Bryan Butler and Benjamin Butler of San Antonio, granddaughter Jill Shackelford and husband Sam, of Austin, great grandchildren Joseph Kyle Jackson, Elizabeth Marie Jackson, Andrew James Jackson, Bryan Butler, Benjamin Butler, Jordan Brook Shackelford and Jackson Ridge Shackelford and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Butler’s family would like to especially give thanks to St. David’s Hospital specifically RN Belinda Sikes and the special care that she gave to Mrs. Butler. Family would also like to thank the staff at The Summit at Westlake Hills, The Heritage at Gaines Ranch, and Dr. Pothala MD for the wonderful care given to Mrs. Butler.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday October 27, 2010 at Cook Walden / Forest Oaks Memorial Park, with Dr. David Procter of Austin Baptist Church officiating, followed by a reception at “El Matt’s” Austin Texas.
In lieu of flowers donations are requested in her memory to the Youth Scholarship Fund at Fitzhugh Baptist Church 11607 Crumley Ranch Road, Austin Texas 78738 or the Uvalde Public Library.
