This sad news travelled slowly to our corner of the world.  I am grateful to have worked with Max when he was on our Board of Directors, and shared a friendship that continued, though slowed by distance after I left Austin.  Thank you, Max, for your perceptive advice, and the ideas and humor you added to every room you were in.   Above all for your support and insistence on rigor.
