Nelwyn Frances Jones Polston (“Wendy”) was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on November 30, 1944 to Hilda Frances Skeahan and Cecil Burton Jones, Sr. She joined our Lord on March 25, 2021 during the hour of Divine Mercy. Wendy was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all she met during her 76 years.
She graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1962 where she was active in 4-H Club, Library Club, Latin Club and Secretaries of Tomorrow. Known as “Zoots”, Wendy was also active in Band, playing the saxophone for Ensemble and Stage Bands. She followed with her undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University for Women in 1966, where she participated in the Wesley Foundation and D’Belles Social Club. She married Eddie Polston in April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, and was married for over 17 years. In 1977, she completed her Master’s Degree in Secondary Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In graduate school, Wendy belonged to the Kappa Delta Pi honor society. She worked in, consulted and managed medical laboratories for over 47 years and taught at the high school and collegiate level. She was also a member of Delta Rho Delta service sorority, serving as President from 2012-2013.
Wendy spent her last few years at Parkwood Meadows, where she was able to teach art classes to fellow residents. She loved to share her time and talent.
Wendy is survived by her daughter Susan (Polston) Mills and her two granddaughters, Ryan Weaver Mills and McClane “Laney” Cecile Mills. She loved “her girls” fiercely and spent lots of time at swim meets, making jewelry and painting with her granddaughters. She also leaves behind her brother, Cecil Burton “Burt” Jones and his family, Bettina, Max, and Katharine. Wendy was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew, Alex Jones.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on April 24, 2021 at 10a.m. at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mills Road, Austin, Texas 78750. Please observe COVID precautions and wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alex Jones '18 Memorial Corps of Cadets Scholarship through the Texas A&M Foundation – Corp of Cadets account.
