I think Jeff Greinert expresses so well what so many of us are experiencing and feeling as we hear about Paul.  We were up north last night and decided to swing by AutoSystems workshop on our way home to see if he had really closed, as we had discovered the phone was disconnected some months back.  It wasn't at all like him to not let people know.  Then this morning I did a search and found out about the terrible accident.  I am still in shock, and so sad that we have lost such a great person.  I know it must be an incredibly hard time for those of you who were very close to him, for his immediate family, and for everyone who got to see him often, and I just wanted you to know that we are thinking of you and sending energy your way.  What a sweet, honest, real person.  I last saw Paul last summer when a warning light came on in my little Echo and I swung by his place to see if he could look at it.  Of course he did.  Despite the terrible heat and dryness, he was there.  I still can't wrap my head around the fact that he's not.  There.

Tonight, I got my oldest son to help me take one of our cars to Autosystems Workshop, where I was going to leave it overnight and call Paul in the morning so that he could make time to diagnose and fix it.  The AW sign was gone, but fortunately some people were outside the business across the street, and I went to talk to them.  They told me about Paul.  To his family and his friends, I offer my deepest condolences.  I can't say that I was close to him, but he was the topmost mechanic in my opinion for the 30 years he worked on our cars, both in the east and west sides of Lamar.  Paul was a man who was so amazingly talented, and was truly honest and caring.  If I miss Paul the mechanical genius and honest businessman this much, then I can only imagine how his dear family and close friends must have felt last autumn, and surely still feel today.  To all who knew him much better than I did, you were then blessed and very fortunate to have had that opportunity.

I only found out of Paul's passing today because I was taking my wife's vehicle to the shop and found it closed.  I started taking my cars to Paul in the late 80's when the shop was on the other side of Lamar.  He earned my trust and I went back to him ever since because he gave great service at an honest value.

It's wonderful to read that the other aspects of his life were just as sincere.  I pray his wife and children find comfort in knowing that another one of his customers appreciated him and will miss him.

Paul was my life-long friend. We met in automotive school in 1972. I knew him so well that I had forgotten what a magnificent human being he was. He had his idiosyncrasies, which I believe just made him more charismatic. But more than anything, I miss Paul's quick, oddball sense of humor. It sparked my own quirky outlook on life, and helped us get past the jagged edges in our lives.

How do you replace a friend like that? You don't. You just remember and savor the uncountable times you were so incredibly fortunate to have crossed paths with him in this lifetime... but still, I want my friend back...

Dear Jean:  I have been taking my cars to Paul for 25 years and I always knew he was honest and thorough in his work.  One time my battery went out and I had no money,  Paul bought a battery for me, installed it and let me pay for it on my next payday.  Other times he installed headlight bulbs and never charged me a cent.  I will always remember the smiley face on his desk that said, "I love you, Dad.  from Jordan"  His desk drawer was always full of change.  I will grieve his loss for a long time to come.

I want to share this with your family as I did with you about a week ago when I met you on Spicewood Springs Road. I'm a real estate agent in Austin, Texas and on that fateful day I had just finished an open house in Spicewood Estates. Driving to get my last open house sign at Ashton Ridge and Spicewood Spgs. I had turned into a driveway at the bottom of the hill. After getting back in my car I had to get back in the line of traffic that was coming down the hill. Your husband saw that I needed in the line so he moved his motorcycle up about 7 feet to the car in front of him to allow me to get behind him in traffic. It was a beautiful day and I thanked him with a nod of my head and he nodded back. I thought what a nice man he was to do that for a stranger. Then he turned right to continue on the old Spicewood Spgs. and I turned left to go home for a minute. Getting back in my car to go meet a friend I drove down Yaupon Drive to Spicewood Spgs. and at the bottom of the hill I saw your husband/father there after he had been hit. It upset me so much and I got out of my car and talked to the people on the street. They told me what had happened and I felt so sad. I didn't know Paul but I knew he was a good person from the kind thing he did for me not 5 minutes earlier. I am saddened by the tragic accident that took him early in his life and my condolences to your family. As Jean told me he was doing what he loved when he died and went to heaven. Jean, I just learned of Paul sudden death. I can't express how terribly sorry I am of that terrible tragedy. He was alway very pleasant when he came to the office. It should be easy to describe Paul because all of this is true, but this is not enough. Paul is an Enigma, because he is not easily described. He was:
-an auto mechanic...and an inventor of tools
-a wrench turner...and a business owner
-he repaired things....and also designed and built them from scratch
-took pictures...and froze good memories forever in our home.

All of this is true, but it is not enough. How could I spend so much time with him and not know all of this? It was because his focus was on:
-his family; his kids
-the job at hand
-the focus was never on him.

The reason is because he was a servant leader; he was quietly leading.

From a Christian perspective servant leadership is not a concept or principal, but an inner standard of living that requires a spiritual understanding of identity and mission. In other words; "you know who you are...and what you believe...and you do that".

I think that is called being your own man.

You can see it today in how we are dressed; in the number of people from so many different places who have been touched. You can see it in his family and his three wonderful children.

Paul was a friend to us all at the store . I did not know him like the folks at the memorial service but I did know him well enough to say he was a gentleman and a good man who will be missed . We are very sorry for your loss and will miss our friend . You will be in our prayers .

As I sat and listened to all the friends who spoke so highly of Paul at his memorial service, I was amazed to learn so much about him that I did not know.  Some spoke of his skill and integrity as a mechanic, others about his tool inventions, or his interest in photography, scuba diving, biking, or blues guitar.  A wide array of interests!  These were all God given talents and areas where he excelled. As I stood up to speak, though, I could only talk about Paul "the family man", and specifically, Paul, "the dad".  

Paul was involved in the lives of his kids.  He helped coach soccer teams, never missed their many games if he could help it, and attended all the school events where our kids went to school together.  He also involved himself in the Scouting program with the boys.  He and I, along with Leon Steelman, were Webelos leaders for 2 years.  When the boys graduated to Boy Scouts, he graduated as a leader along with them.  We would often go on the monthly campouts with our boys as part of the adult "rocking chair" patrol.  Those were some good years as we watched our boys grow and mature.  I know from owning my own business that there are demands on time and energy that make it difficult to be such a constant presence in kids' lives.  But he was there, always the dad.  Jason, Joshua and Jordan are better adults because of Paul's willingness to be involved in what was important and/or beneficial to them.

One hundred years from now, few will remember the accomplishments of Paul (or any of the rest of us).  What I saw in Paul, however, will have a lasting impact on his family now and in future generations because of the legacy    he left to those who were closest to him.  That legacy is love expressed by time and presence and encouragement.  I think this helps to define the character and quality of Paul's life.  He will be missed.

A fellow teacher recommended Paul to me when I needed work done on my very first car, a 1987 (?) blue Mazda 626. Over the years my husband I a have brought him many cars and had grown to love and appreciate his friendly manner, easy smile and trustworthy workmanship.  He's been my mechanic most of my adult life!  I have had so many friends, co-workers and family members pick me up at his workshop that I began to be tickled because when I would explain where they needed to pick me up, they would say, "oh yeah, I've taken you there before."  I've thought about him every day since I saw his obituary.  I wanted to write you a note to tell you how much we appreciated him and that you are not alone in missing him.

For almost two decades, Paul was our mechanic and our friend.  In his profession, Paul was talented, honest and ethical.  More importantly, he was a great man and a wonderful person.  He was taken from us far too soon, and he will be missed more than he will ever know.  Our hearts go out to his wife and children in the midst of this terrible tragedy.

Debi and I have known Paul and Jean since 1984. For many years, Paul and I coached our sons together in recreational soccer starting with under sixes — the Firebirds. We didn't have a clue about what we were doing, but neither did our players. We didn't even know what a Firebird was. And even though I had played soccer and Paul hadn't, I somehow got Paul to agree to be the official coach. That's the kind of guy he is. He always stepped up to do what was needed, whether he was comfortable with it or not. 

We did scouts together — Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts — which are an amazing and progressive form of organized chaos. We went on a lot of campouts together, a lot of meetings, awards banquets, service projects and summer camps. It always seemed to be too hot, or too cold, or too wet. But there were times it also seemed to be too perfect. Watching the boys enjoying their friends and nature on a beautiful fall or spring weekend, and having the privilege of getting to participate in it with them.

We watched our children grow up and we shared life together. We often talked about how hard it was to parent without a manual, and we did it the best we could. Five years ago Debi and I moved out to the Bastrop area, and even though I didn't see Paul as much as in the past, when the wildfires burned our 11 acres, Paul was one of the first people to come out and help us clean up the tree debris. Not just once, but almost every weekend. Because it was in his character — that's just the kind of guy he is.

King Soloman wrote in Ecclesiastes chapter 3: “He has made everything beautiful in its time... I know that there is nothing better for man than to rejoice and to do good in his life. Moreover, every man that eats and drinks, and sees good in his labor, it is the gift of God.” Paul was a gifted mechanic, and he spent the last two years designing and building a custom motorcycle. His friend Ken called it his masterpiece. Last Saturday he got to test ride that motorcycle for the first time. It was a beautiful fall day, and I know he must have had a glorious ride, enjoying the work of his hands. And though the ride ended tragically in a split second, it wasn't his fault and he died enjoying one of the things he loved the most.

That motorcycle might have been his professional masterpiece, but his family was his real masterpiece, his legacy and his reason for living. He leaves behind his adoring wife Jean, two fine sons in Jason and Joshua, two amazing girls in his daughter Jordan and his daughter-in-law Gabriella. They are his true masterpiece, and I know all is labors is this regard were a gift from God. 

I think the biggest benefit we can gain from a tragedy like this is to consider how we live out our lives. King David wrote in Psalms 90 “Teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.” Soloman also wrote in Ecclesiastes chapter 7: “..the day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for death is the destiny of every man; and the living should take it to heart.” So if we are to take something positive home with us, it is to set our hearts upon the task of living life to the fullest before our God, our family and our friends.

Paul was a quiet, private and unassuming man. Even though I've know Paul for more than 25 years, I've found out amazing details about him in the week following his death that have surprised me. I knew he liked music, but I never contemplated seeing him sing and play lead guitar in a blues band. He just never talked about it to me. And to listen to him tell of the exploits of his chocolate lab Marley, who he called the "Termite," you'd think he couldn't wait to get rid of him. Yet I know he loved that dog and would take him for rides in his roadster, goggles and all. 

Paul is a good man, a good friend and I will miss him in this life, but I look forward to seeing him in the next one.

Paul was the most honest car mechanic I've ever had the pleasure of doing business with. Though I've been taking my cars to Paul for over 20 years, I regret I never knew him better.  But I know he was a man of integrity and skill.  My most heart felt condolences to his family and wish all who read this to know that Paul was one of those people who made the world a better place.

My family and I knew Paul "only" through AutoSystems Workshop, and thus we never met the rest of his family.  However, over the course of the last 25 years of going to no other mechanic but Paul, we felt like we knew his family.  He and I would share tales of our kids -- and so we learned all about soccer, moves to San Antonio, moves to Denver, and the like.  Though he was busy, he never failed to take the time to talk and connect.  There is little I can add to the wonderful tributes already on this site.  But here is one indication of Paul the mechanic and Paul the man.  He was always quick to squeeze us in if we had a particular need.  And early on it was obvious how honest Paul was, sometimes counseling us NOT to undergo some expensive piece of work if he thought it unnecessary.  But the true mark of Paul was how he treated our sons when they grew up and had cars of their own.  I know nothing about car maintenance, and when one of my sons would have a problem I'd say "Call Paul."  And Paul welcomed them as new customers, squeezed THEM in when they waited til the last minute before getting some work done before driving back to college, and just generally treated them with respect.  He exhibited a caring towards them the way only a parent can.  OK, one last thing.  He was fun. I always enjoyed my time with Paul; he was well read and smart and well spoken, and just plain fun to be around.  I, and we, will deeply miss him.

My heart goes out to the Jean, Josh, Jordan, and Jason. I know that Paul was such an important part of their lives. His untimely passing is hard to believe and he will be missed. I didn't know Paul well, but know that he helped raise a wonderful man named Jason who is a treasured son-in-law and the perfect husband to Gabriella. I thank him for that and am so sorry that he will not be here to enjoy many more years with his family.

I was shocked and terribly saddened to see Paul's obituary in yesterday's paper. Like so many who have posted, I've been taking my cars for Paul's excellent care for many, many years. I would never go on a road trip without first having Paul check out my car to see whether everything was as it should be. I've sung his praises to any friends or family who needed work done on their cars.
When I found out that one of my 17th century ancestors was named Greenleaf, I mentioned it to him. The next time I went in, he had a book to show me—a history of the Greenleafs. It turned out that we shared that ancestor way back there in Newbury Massachusetts. What a small world, and it was so much better for Paul's place in it. 
My heart goes out to all his family and friends who are suffering from this terrible loss.

Paul was the best and most honest mechanic in Austin and a good friend. He worked on my cars for almost 20 years. I had complete faith in Paul and he never let me down. The guy had so many talents. I loved talking with him while he worked on my cars. I'm really going to miss him. This is so sad.

Dear Jean and family,
Wayne and I send our deepest condolences on your loss. We began taking our cars to Paul before the fire on Kramer. I can't even remember a time when anyone but Paul worked on our foreign cars. When he said something needed to be repaired, we always knew he was spot-on because he would never recommend work that he didn't feel necessary. The best part of picking up a repaired car was being able to chat with Paul at the end of the day. He was our trusted and excellent mechanic, but he was also a friend who made our lives richer for knowing him. We will sorely miss him.

We were so blessed to discover Paul's Workshop in north Austin over 30 years ago.  It didn't take long to recognize not only Paul's considerable auto skills, but also his honesty and integrity.  Many times over the years I have taken my children's cars to Paul with the instructions "Just look it over, Paul, and do whatever you think necessary to make it safe", knowing that he would use the same caring and concern he would afford his own children.  Paul totally earned our trust and respect.  And, he always found time to tell us of things going on in his life, and to ask about things going on in ours.  We will miss our friend, Paul, and offer our sincere condolences to the family.

I'm going to really miss stopping by to talk with Paul about cars, bikes, the world and life. We saw eye to eye on so many things and could discuss anything since Paul had such a knack for expressing his opinion without talking down to anyone. He helped me grow up during my college years, gave me a place to work, organized some of my best bike trips and was always here in Austin when I came through town. I will really miss him. My deepest sympathy to Jean and the kids.

Everything in my life since June '78 traces directly to Paul. In town from Houston looking for a Volvo tech job, he said the life changing words. " I think the dealer needs a service manager. " Within two hours I had a job, and moved to Austin on July 4th, 1978. 
After leaving the car business, Paul started working on mine, my friends and families, even my grandsons cars. 
We bought Honda's on his advice. 
Paul was always a lemon/ lemonade guy. When presented with a wrecked car, he built himself a two-seater runaround .
When burned out, he moved down the street. 
We were surveying the charred mess and his melted shop phone rang, it amused him, we thought it would make a great commercial. Laughing amongst the rubble, Paul answered the phone. 
He always did. 
Jean, Jason, and Joshua , Paul was the most gifted man in town.

  We are so devastated that Paul's life has ended so abruptly and way too soon. He was one of the first & favorite people I met after I moved to Austin in 1979, when I was the proud owner of my first car: a 1979 VW Dasher that I would not let anyone but Paul touch. My parents took their 1969 Mercedes to him for a tune-up, and were astounded at the low price of the parts -- half of what the dealership charged them. His tune-up was the only time that Mercedes sounded like it came fresh out of the German Factory, too.
    I loved tipping Paul with homemade cookies, for his bills were always too low. He  talked my husband through a Honda engine rebuild without charging him a nickel. He even looked at an American Chevy (ugh!) whose a-c was acting up. Cookies are not enough for that kind of service, my friend.
       The best word to describe Paul is "Integrity." Very few men can match the amount of Integrity you possessed, Paul, in everything you said or did.
 Jordan, you probably don't remember me when I walked into Good Eats on N. Lamar one morning and saw you and your parents enjoying breakfast together. You must have been all of 6 or 7. I told you that you looked just like Ariel from the Little Mermaid, and your eyes lit up brighter than a Christmas tree. Your Dad's pride in you was also quit evident. His eyes lit up just as bright.
 Paul, I'm hoping you and my Dad are tootling around in heaven in that perfectly tuned-up Mercedes. That is the only comfort I can take right now. Nobody can or will ever fill your shoes.

We were so saddened to hear the news of Paul's passing.  It was an honor to have known Paul.  He was such a decent, honest, and affable individual.  During numerous auto repair issues that he helped our family with, I never looked forward to the dealing with them, but I always looked forward to chatting with Paul.  He will be greatly missed. The world was a better place because of Paul's intelligence, skill, honesty and kindness. He was part of many communities who will miss him greatly. I've been taking my cars to Paul for about 20 years and was very sad to hear about this tragedy.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Greenleaf family.  Paul was a good man who did great work andtreated people fairly and honestly.  

I started going to him because my brother in law recommendedhim.   My sisters took their cars to him,too and I recommended him to anyone who ever needed a mechanic.  Those who took my advice were alwaysimpressed with Paul and, most importantly, trusting of his work.  

Paul has known me from the time I was a single college student to now as a married professional. He helped my wife and me save a beloved car from the insurance companywho wanted to total it.  When I askedPaul if he thought we could fix it, he said of course and didn't hesitate tohelp us.  We use that car regularly to this day.

The last time we talked he was giving me advice over thephone about a car issue – he was always accessible and helpful.  

I will miss going to see my friend and mechanic Paul andI hope that his wife, children and entire family will find some comfort from readingthis.

It is dificult to express the depths of our sorrow that Mary and I felt when we learned of Paul's passing. I have always counted him as one of my dearest friends and someone that was there for me when I needed advice.  Whether it was a simple or complex problem between the two of us there was always a solution. We have known each other since the 70's back when Paul hired me to work with him at Sports Car Specialists in Austin, and I counted him as a mentor to put me on the track to becoming a better technician. I will miss our monthly conversations about all things automotive and life in general. We are truely blessed to have had him in our life. Our deepest condolances to the family.

I saw the slide show and couldn't get over how much each of you looks like your Dad in different stages of his life. The best thing about each picture was the smiles. We are so very sorry for your loss.  Although our time around Paul was limited, it was obvious the commitment and caring he had for his family and the extended family that happens with your kids' outside interests, like Trinity soccer. Paul was a warm, friendly and honest man. Many of us were referred to AutoSystems through a friend, and we all trusted Paul's work and respected his work ethic. He will be missed.

My husband Marshall and I were so saddened to hear of Paul's passing. We have been taking our cars to his shop for close to 15 years, and we always recommended him. He was so kind, and always wanted to know how we were doing, and asked about our daughter. We always stayed a bit longer to chit chat, and Paul always had something witty to say about current events. We will miss having him to count on when we needed him. He was a true Gentleman.

I began taking my car to Paul several years ago and soon recognized Paul's evident strength of character. The third time he serviced my car, I was astonished at the bill as I was unaware that my car needed extra work. Instead of insisting I pay the entire bill, he reduced it. He certainly earned my loyalty and that of other friends I recommended him to. I have yet to find anyone else who would do such a thing in today's day and age. I am so privileged to have known such a person, who did the right thing even at a cost to himself. I am so very sorry that he is gone.

Paul was a great friend who was very gifted in many ways,with a sharp sense of humor  and clever wit which I shall surely miss.

dear jean and kids,

paul was one of our oldest & dearest friends. we were teenagers, we became parents and drifted apart because all our time went to our familes. we kept in touch by phone, and the occasional, "paul, my car is broken, what should i do?" he will remain in our hearts as a cherished friend for thirty five years. he always told us about you kids and kept us up to date on how well you were growing and the activities you were involved in. we spent alot of time as families when you were younger. what we want you to know, and what we take away ourselves is that we loved your dad very much, admired him greatly and will forever remember his fantastic sense of humor, loyalty to his friends, and devotion to his family.
