Perry Rycraft McPherson

5 January, 193216 September, 2020

Perry Rycraft McPherson, 88, passed away peacefully September 16, 2020 in Austin, Texas at Christopher House of Hospice Austin.

Perry was born January 5, 1932 in Denver, Colorado to W. Perry and Gertrude McPherson.

He graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, attended Rice University and received a law degree from Southern Methodist University, where he met his wife Ann Nolte McPherson. After finishing at SMU, he served in the Navy before settling down in 1958 to practice law in Port Arthur, Texas, with a career spanning almost 60 years. He was a compassionate and generous attorney, receiving the Blackstone Award for his long and distinguished career. In 2018, he and Ann moved to Austin, Texas.

Perry was very active in the Port Arthur civic community. He was twice president and a many year board member of the Port Arthur YMCA. He was president of the Port Arthur Kiwanis Club and Lieutenant Governor of the Division 10 of the Texas-Oklahoma District Kiwanis. He was also very active in several churches over the years, most recently Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Port Neches. His hobbies included golf, fishing, and playing low stakes poker and gin rummy with his friends. He also spent many summer vacations with his extended family in his beloved Colorado mountains. He was devoted to his grandchildren and loved to take them to get haircuts whenever they visited him.

Besides his wife Ann, Perry is survived by his sister, Sandra Hicks; son Eddie McPherson and his wife Karen; daughter Lynn Bucknall and her husband Chris; four grandchildren, Brian, Elliott, Will and Holly Bucknall. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jane Russell, nieces Mindy Russell, Paula Delk and Ruth Ann Elmore. His surviving nephews are John and Michael Hicks. Last but not least, he is survived by his loyal dog Max.

We are so grateful to all of his many wonderful caregivers, including Mary, Marie, Aricka, Bonney, Francine and especially Angie. We offer many thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Christopher House for serving him in his last days. Because of the current pandemic, at this time we will honor Perry in our hearts. Memorials may be made in honor of Perry’s life to the Port Arthur YMCA, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, or another charity of your choice.

Perry was our family’s attorney as well as friend. He looked after my dad, Tee Watts, at the end of my dad’s life. He also helped me with my dad’s estate. Perry was honest and compassionate. My brother, Jeb, sister, Jana, and I have always admired Perry and will have fond memories of him.

Perry became a good friend while I was the CEO of the Y in Port Arthur; we both shared a love for the Y but I really got to know Perry when we golfed together; his vocabulary expanded quite a bit and we enjoyed friendly competition for many years...I was honored to join his Band of Brothers for their Santa Fe golf trip and saw Perry’s fierce competitive streak when I was fortunate to come out on top in the nightly gin rummy games.
I miss him greatly but have such fond memories...God bless his family whom he loved!

My sincere condolences to the McPhersons and Bucknalls. I'm always saddened to learn of the loss of another one of the foundational leaders from our Port Arthur childhood, but what a Life Well Lived! Eddie & Lynn, I pray that those memories with your dad can give you and your mom great comfort as you mourn his passing and tremendous joy as you celebrate his life. Johnny C.

We were sorry to hear of Perry's passing. There are so many good memories we have of him. He was a highly respected and a meticulous attorney and we always knew that no detail would be overlooked. My mom worked for him for many years and we always knew we could count on him for any matter we brought to him. He was also a great sparring partner and would often play the "devil's advocate" so that we could clarify and commit to our requests. He and Ann were a beautiful couple and a joy to be around. He will certainly be missed. To Ann and his family we send our condolences and we are thinking of you all especially at this time.

Farrell remembers getting his first hole-in-one while playing golf with Perry. Unforgettable. Love to you all, Joyce Philen and Farrell Menard

Mr. Mac was a fixture in my childhood and always fascinated me! I knew he was crackerjack smart, a natural-born adventurer, funny as all get out, and a real softy underneath a stoic shell. He made me feel like we had our own relationship and that I was not just the bratty youngest Parker kid. He let me ‘drive’ on the beach road, ride up high on his shoulders in Rockport, and shoot at slithering critters at our bayou shack! May your memory be a blessing, Mr. Mac.

Prrty and I were colleagues, each starting our practice of law, in Rutan and Phares and associated with Port Arthur Abstract Company. I appreciated his cheerful attitude toward life and his dedicated professiohalism toward his clients. I dd not get to know him too well as I left the firm not too long after he joined, but myassessment of him proved to be correct as I read the details of a life well lived.
