

He attended Hebbronville public schools, Kemper Military School and Premont high school. After graduation from high school in 1959 he attended Texas Tech University and was a member of the rodeo team. His favorite team sport was riding the bulls. After Tech, he transferred to Texas A&I in Kingsville to be close to his home and have a job with a local furniture store. In 1964 Dick moved to Commerce and attend East Texas State University to be close to Susan who was in nursing school in Dallas. He received his BBA from East Texas State University (ETSU) in 1965.
After graduation from ETSU, he served his country in the US Naval Air Force reserve during the Viet Nam war. While in the reserves, Dick joined Sears Roebuck on the management development program. He had many assignments during his 40+ years with Sears that took the family to Oklahoma, New Mexico and finally to Corpus Christi where he retired in 1992. In 1993 he went into business for himself and bought a franchise for Bourbon Street Candy Company. He opened stores in Waco, San Antonio (2) and Corpus Christi.
Dick accepted Christ at a young age in Sullivan City, Texas. He rededicated his life to Christ in young adulthood and became very active serving on many church committees. teaching Evangelism Explosion, and learning to counsel according to scripture. He served as a deacon in several Baptist churches throughout his career moves with Sears. He was currently a member of Hyde Park Baptist in Austin, active in Bible Study Fellowship, a member of the Rotary Club (Corpus Christi) and supported all activities in which his children were involved. Dick was a patriot; he loved his country and supported many charities including Tunnel to Towers, Wounded Warriors and The Heritage Foundation.
He was an outdoors man and loved to hunt and fish throughout central Texas. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren a love for hunting as well.
Dick met Susan Hughes in 1961 while working a summer job in the oil fields of west Texas. After a 5 year courtship which allowed her to graduate from Baylor University, they married in 1966. On June 11, 2025, they celebrated their 59th anniversary. They moved to Austin in 2000 to be near their children and grandchildren. Next to his salvation, Dick considered his family the most important achievement of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan and three children Richard Beggs IV (Sally), Julie Beth Beggs (Shelly) and Robert David Beggs (Angie). He has nine grandchildren and one Malachi Ryan, who is in heaven and has now met his Papa.
A celebration of Dick’s life will be held on August 16th at 11 AM in the chapel of Hyde Park Baptist Church, 3901 Speedway, Austin, TX 78751. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Bible Study Fellowship International, Hyde Park Baptist Church, Tunnel to Towers or a charity of your choice.
One of his favorite verses was II Chronicles 16:9a “The eyes of the Lord search to and fro throughout the earth to support the hearts of those who are truly His…..” Well done, my sweetheart.
