He attended Prairie View A&M University where he met his wife of 53 years, Martha (Radin) Johnson. He served 20 years in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He earned a BS in Science from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Master‘s Degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University.
Richard taught high school over 30 years, including 10 years at the Science Academy at LBJ High School. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a Master Mason.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Martha, and by his children, Tracey Johnson and Karen Featherston and her husband, David; his grandchildren, Sarah and Jessica.
Funeral services will be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 15th of September 2011, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2938 East 13th Street, Austin, Texas. Military Honors will be provided by the US Army at the committal services in Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas.
