First got to know Dick in 2011 shortly after I became president at  Seton Hall.  My wife and I met him in Austin and he immediately welcomed us with open arms. I got to travel with him throughout China in what Dick called a trip of a lifetime. We had a lot of fun and he only ate one thing throughout the trip - fried rice! We would be at a banquet and he would ask for fried rice. We bonded over fried rice and a few drinks. Whenever we saw him in Austin he would always bring a couple of bottles of wine he had bottled just for him in Napa. We last saw him in spring 2017. We will miss you and your smile. I met  Dick in the border town of Reynosa in the early 80’s in my parents jewelry dress and liquor shop right at the time when I was also a student at UT Austin. We kept in touch throughout my UT days and occasionally he would asked me to bring him back stuff from my parents store and always paid me with my favorite LPs from his radio station. 
When I came back to McAllen, we still kept in touch but not as often actually rarely, but when we did, he was always a very good friend. In the early 2000s my son also went to UT Austin, so I called Dick, and Dick said that if my son ever needed anything for him to feel free to call him at any time. That is the way I will always remember dick, as a good friend that was always there. I’m sorry I didn’t get to speak to him much after my son came back home from college, but I will always be thankful for his friendship. Thank you very much Dick.
