Roberto Monreal was born to the late Jesus Saucedo Monreal and the late Eloisa Esquivel Monreal in Austin, Texas on May 30, 1954. He was the ninth of their eleven children. He first attended John B. Winn Elementary and then went on to attend and graduate from the Texas School for the Blind, in Austin. During his time there he won several wrestling awards and tournaments.
Most people who knew Roberto for any length of time at all knew him by the nickname of "Baby Bull" or "Bull" for short. In fact, many only knew him by those nicknames. If you asked around Disch Faulk Field or at the Back Room you might not find anyone who knew Roberto, but everyone knew Baby Bull.
Roberto earned those nicknames due to his work, his love for rodeos and bullriding and for his strength. For many years he worked for Berger Allied Van Lines. He was good at what he did, made many friends there and had many funny stories to tell about his work over the years.
But it was much later in his life that he showed us how strong and how stubborn he really was. He fought diabetes and kidney problems for many of his last years. Despite having heart attacks and amputations he never slowed down and in fact pushed himself even harder to continue to do those things that he enjoyed most.
Roberto loved everything about the Texas Longhorns. He could often be found either at Memorial Stadium or at the Disch. He was well known around Longhorn sports and found many years of happiness there. He loved and respected those that he worked with over the years at U.T. One of his dearest friends in life was the late Mike Korth. They endured many trials together. It is comforting to know that they will now be together again.
Roberto also loved being with his family. He was often the life of the party. He cared deeply for them. Roberto was generous with anything that he had and always ready to help when and where he could.
Roberto was preceded in death by his brothers Jesus E. Monreal and Victor E. Monreal. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his siblings Lupe Nunez, Alice Uhl, Maggie Horn, Janie Tuttle, Albert Monreal, Olivia Winner, Maria Langston, and Freddy Monreal. He also leaves behind his goddaughter Tina Langston who is also his niece, as well as many other nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Roberto will be greatly missed. It will be hard to think about Longhorn Sports, Western Movies, Country Music, or Rodeos without being reminded of him. But in those memories he continues to live with each and every one of us for eternity.
The family would like to thank the many friends and caregivers who helped Roberto live life to the fullest until the very end.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin.
