He is survived by his wife, Mary, four children, and one step-child: Sandi Walker and husband, Jason; Stephanie Anderson and husband, John; Michael Dillon and wife, Cristalynn; Patrick Dillon and Nicole Gates; Gavin Ashworth and his wife, Amy; as well as eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Fortson and husband, Bob and sister-in-law Diane Dillon.
Family was first for Roger; he was a truly beloved husband, father and grandfather.
There was also nothing Roger would not do to help someone else in need throughout his life: family, extended family, friends, neighbors, co-workers.
Roger worked in the oil and gas industry for nearly 35 years, first as a Service Technician and later as a Service Manager, Trainer and Field Operations Manager for Petroleum Solutions, Inc. of Texas. He enjoyed his work, training and mentoring technicians all over Texas, and developed numerous innovative programs to aide their work.
He loved Baseball since childhood; his favorite Major League teams were the Cardinals and Astros. He also coached Little League baseball when his children were growing up and was an adored coach, taking this job to heart as much as any other.
In the 1980s and 90s he established one of the original and more popular on-line greeting card sites and kept this going for many years in his spare time. This site gained notoriety through USA Today and Yahoo mentions at the time as one of the more popular greeting card sites.
After his children were grown, he started a major hobby of restoring antique radios from the 1930s and 40s. He restored them mechanically and cosmetically to operational works of art and with the view in mind of preserving this history for another 100 years or so. And he became an avid collector. (See his website "Returned to Glory")
He had a passion for travel, and being surrounded by nature, and liked old lighthouses. He loved taking the back roads and exploring, hiking, fishing and taking pictures.
In recent years he became a semi-pro photographer and enjoyed this immensely, capturing precious images of family and places he travelled with his wife, Mary.
His smile, his fantastic sense of humor, his genuine compassion for others, his dedication and undying persistence, problem solving of any task or hobby, large or small will all be sorely missed.
A Memorial Service for Roger will be held Thursday, Feb 12th, 2015; 7:00 pm at: Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home,
2620 South Congress Ave., Austin, Texas 78704
