Ronald Adam Geil died January 24, 2013, shortly before his 81st birthday, after almost a decade of battling neurological problems finally diagnosed as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He was born on February 10, 1932 to Adam John and Helen Eve Geil in Omaha, Nebraska, where he grew up. In December 1954 he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in electrical engineering and also a commission in the US Air Force where he served in Washington D.C. for two years. In June 1955 he married his college sweetheart, Louise Castle. She joined him in Washington as a civilian employee at the fledging National Security Agency where Lt. Geil was assigned.
Following military and NSA service, Ron was employed by Univac, then Tracor in Austin and its subsidiaries until his division was sold to Greyhound Computer Corp. There he served as regional manager in computer mainframe leasing. He retired in 1988 but was soon motivated to help with the founding of Government Capital Corporation, a municipal leasing business. His second retirement came in 2003.
During their 57+ years of marriage, Ron and Louise raised a daughter, Pam, and two sons, Glenn and Gregg. The family lived in suburban Washington D.C., Omaha, San Antonio, Dayton OH, McLean VA and, for the past 44 years, in Austin TX. During those years Ron served many terms as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and also a term as Moderator of the regional Presbytery during the sensitive period when most northern and southern Presbyterians were finally reuniting.
Ron was a devoted family man for whom his kids, their spouses and six grandkids took top priority, and they in turn adored him and relied upon him for sage advice and loving support in their various maturing endeavors. He and Louise took some wonderful trips together, but they will always put annual family vacations at the top of their fondest memories list. On his last trip to Port Aransas in 2009, the young men hoisted him in his wheel chair atop the jetty so he could experience one more time the salty spray on his skin and the memories evoked.
During his recent declining health years, the family was staunchly supportive with love, visits and other forms of communication. He lived to attend the joyful weddings of two of his grandkids and to know in his heart that all of his grandchildren were well along good paths toward productive adult lives.
Left to celebrate his beautiful life are his wife Louise, his sister, Barbara Geil of Omaha, children and spouses Pam (Geil) and Tim McNutt of suburban Dallas, Glenn and Mary Geil of suburban Atlanta, Gregg and Carolyn Geil of Baton Rouge, and Grandchildren and spouses Meggie (McNutt) and Matt Abendschein of Austin, Timmy and Amber McNutt of Plano, Mandy McNutt of Waco, Adam Geil and fiance Corrine of Marietta GA, Brian Geil of Athens GA, Colby Geil of Sugar Hill GA and great-granddaughter Presley Abendschein. Also Susan Lenihan, our "almost daughter" in our lives for decades. Special loving thanks go out to Dominga Barr and Albert Puente, above and beyond caregivers along the way, and dear friends who never let Ron feel forgotten or overlooked as his disabilities increased.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd.
After a private family graveside service, the family's friends are invited to his memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive, Austin TX 78731, on Monday, January 28, 2013, at 11:00 o'clock. Memorials may be sent to the church's memorial fund where he has served as a dedicated member since 1970 or to the Austin Humane Society.
