Sadie Shirleen Smith

Born in Austin at Breckenridge Hospital to Lee and Annie Lee Brown, Sadie was raised on Blumie Street off Brodie Lane, where the Brown family built generations of history and stories. One of nine siblings, Sadie grew up in a large family that shaped her deep sense of the importance of family and togetherness. She was a loving mother, devoted wife, sister, aunt, and grandmother.

She was a proud mother to her three children, Daniel, Sharon, and Jackie, and found her greatest joy in spending time with her many grandchildren. Sadie shared a long, loving marriage with her husband, Robert “DeDe” Smith. They met at Alexander’s place in Austin Tx and shared many years of memories and setting an example of commitment. She cared for and cherished him until his passing in 2020. We take comfort in knowing they are now reunited in heaven.

Sadie loved blues music, bingo, couldn’t be beat in dominoes, and any moment spent surrounded by family. She loved her son’s BBQ, turkey and dressing from Luby’s, and was famous for her Thanksgiving dressing with her special ingredient sage. Her grandchildren were her world, and she loved and cared for them as if they were her own children. Family meant everything to Sadie, and she instilled that same love, loyalty, and togetherness in all the generations to follow.

Sadie was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Annie Lee Brown; her husband, Robert Cornelius “DeDe” Smith; her siblings, June Gladdys Dougherty, Nanny Marie Brown, Dawn Fay Streeter, Larry Lee Brown, Johnny Mack Brown, and Jasper James Brown; and her beloved grandchildren, Daniel Dwayne Brown Jr., Brian Lynn Brown Jr., and Hazel Nikole Pierce.

She is survived by her sisters Patricia Ann Brown and Norma Ann Brown, her children Daniel Dwayne Brown, Sharon Arie Brown, Jaqueline Lee Brown, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Our hearts are comforted knowing she was welcomed into heaven by her loved ones who passed before her, especially her beloved DeDe, who we are sure was waiting to greet her.

A funeral service will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish South Chapel, located at 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704, on November 10th at 2:00 p.m.

Sadie will be laid to rest following the service at Brown Cemetery, 706 Castle Ridge Road, Austin, Texas.
