Samuel (Sam) Sperantino DiCarlo was born July 3, 1933, at home, in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was the only child of John DiCarlo and Antoinette Acita DiCarlo. Samuel was baptized at St. Vitus Church, in New Castle and was a member of that church until he graduated from college. He attended Ben Franklin Junior High and New Castle High Schools where he graduated in 1951. Samuel continued his studies at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Mathematics and two minors degrees in Astronomy and Chemistry.
After graduation, he took a position with the Department of Defense in the Rome Air Development Center’s Intelligence and Reconnaissance Division where he worked until his retirement in 1996. His military service, from 1956-1958, brought his career with the US Government to a total of 43 years. There were many awards, certificates and photos with notables that Samuel received for his outstanding service.
In April 1956, Samuel married the love of his life, Carmel Valvo, at St John’s Church in Rome, NY. Drafted, one week after their marriage, he was in basic training at Fort Dix, NJ by early May 1956. He was stationed for the entirety of his service at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, in Aberdeen, MD, a military site for testing war munitions. Samuel participated in the integration of technological advances into weapons research at APG.
With a great sense of humor, Samuel partnered well with his wife Carmey in their many pranks on family, neighbors and coworkers. He enjoyed watching University of Michigan football, watching Ohio State (big UofM rival) lose at football, any and all movies, music concerts, traveling, photography, reading, and just hanging out with the family. Sam was extremely proud and supportive of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Just short of 69 years of marriage and 70 total years of being together, Carmey passed away on January 7, 2025. Samuel is survived by his “helicopter” daughters, Anne and Diane; sons, David and Paul; two sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX, on February 12, 2025 from 4:00-8:00 pm, with the Rosary at 7:00 pm. Samuel's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, 126 W Oltorf St, Austin, on February 13, 2025 at 10:00 am. Live stream of the funeral Mass will be available online.
Samuel was proud to support Carmey’s desire for memorial Masses after her passing and it’s only appropriate that he’d wish the same for himself. Perpetual Masses can be requested from the Carmelite Fathers at https://www.carmelitefathers.com/mt-content/uploads/2018/12/mass-request-form-english.pdf
