Scott Lewis Porter passed away on May 2nd in Hospice comfort care after a long, hard fought battle against a cancer recurrence. Twenty years ago he won that battle and was able to enjoy a lot more good quality time. Now, his Earthly body had done all it could. His wife Lisa was holding his hand, speaking lovingly to him and his brother John was bedside. He was able to finally relax and be at peace.
He was born on January 11th to Wayne & June Porter in Knoxville, Iowa. He was the 3rd of 5 children - two older sisters and then many years later two younger brothers. His sisters were thrilled to get a little baby to play with and have recounted many of the games they played with him while watching him grow. He loved spending time with relatives on surrounding farms, gardening with his father and apparently followed directions well at that age. He recently shared a story about walking to school each day. He had always been taught to never cross without a crossing guard there for safety. He was running late, the guard had left, no cars were coming but he waited an hour or so and then went back home having to explain why he wasn’t in class. Ah, to have such an innocent mind.
Scott was quiet and studious as a young man and said he frequently didn’t even study because the tests were easy either way. His early years were spent moving from Iowa to Nebraska, back to Iowa and then Illinois and eventually back to Iowa where he graduated high school in Des Moines. After high school, he spend some time at MIT, then a two year stint in the Navy. He finally decided he was growing weary of the midwestern winters. He and a friend hopped in the car and drove to Texas and he enrolled in the University of Texas. His passion belonged to the computer sciences. He went on to have a career at multiple companies as a computer technician, chip designer, board creator – if it involved computers he was doing it.
Scott married Lisa Cobb in 1981 with a beautiful outdoor spring wedding surrounded by both families, friends and peacocks. It was the blending of the Porters and the Cobbs and wonderful relationships were built. His work occupied a lot of his time, but he also enjoyed spending time out in the country, watching sunsets, being out on the lake, manning the BBQ grill, and maybe taking a trip or two to Vegas. He truly loved the ability to participate in and watch the growth of lots of nieces and nephews. There was always time to have fun with the kids. Family remained important to him throughout all the years.
His father (Wayne Porter), mother (June Porter), sister (Karen Baysinger), and father-in-law (LeRoy Cobb) preceded him in death. In addition to so many caring friends, neighbors & his wonderful medical team, he will be missed greatly by his wife (Lisa), sister Judy Willett (Jeff), brothers John Porter and Tom Porter (Betsy), mother-in-law (Evelyn Cobb), sisters-in-law Linda Atkinson and Leann Holder (Brad), brother-in-law Kevin Cobb (Robin), and many nieces and nephews. Family gatherings, get togethers, BBQs and parties will be missing that fun spark he would bring, but all have great memories to lean back on.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for each of you to hold him in your thoughts from time to time and maybe remember a special something about him that makes you smile. If you so desire, you might make a donation to a charity of your choice in his honor. He was passionate about sharing.
