Shirley Arldt died in the Lord's name on Thursday, September 22, 2022, having attained the age of 87 years and 23 days, She was born in Austin to the late John and Bertha Arldt on August 30, 1935. From her parents, she learned to value faith, family, and hard work and made these values a priority in her life. She was baptized on September 15, 1935, at St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was also confirmed on April 10, 1949.
After graduation from Stephen F. Austin High School, Shirley attended Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing and Blinn College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She started her nursing career at the Veterans Hospital in Ft. Lyon, Colorado, and spent several years there caring for veterans. After her return to Austin, she pursued other nursing opportunities including employment with The Texas State Dept. of Health and The University of Texas Health Center.
Shirley was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Austin and actively served the congregation in various capacities and on various boards. She loved to sing and spent many years in choir, raising her voice in song and praise to God.
Preceded in death by her parents and former husband, she is survived by her sister Mary Lou (Art) Ruff and brother Mel (Glynna) Arldt. Nieces, Kimberly Layne, Kelly Sexton, and daughter Jillian and Tracy (Bart) Sherman; nephews Stu (Anita) Ruff, Steve Ruff, and Jared (Erika) Arldt, and many great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at 10:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3501 Red River, Austin, TX, 78705. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 am at the church. Burial will take place following the service at 2:00 pm at Capital Park Cemetery, Pflugerville, TX.
