Tailar Kai Matthews, born August 31, 1996, was the only child of Portia D. Matthews in San Antonio, Texas. Tailar was “the sweetest” as described by her family and friends. Today, we remember a sweet, kind, and beautiful soul who touched the lives of all that knew her.
Our beloved Tailar, (Tai-Tai to those who knew her well) graduated from Warren High School in San Antonio Texas. She attended and graduated from Northwest Vista college where she received an Associate of Arts degree. Tailar also attended UTSA where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts. With determination, she went on to pursue and earn her Master of Social Work degree, from UTSA, in June 2023. Tailar was looking forward to pursuing a career in social work, enhancing the lives of others while making the world a better place; one heart at a time. Tailar was a shining example of sweetness, kindness, generosity, positivity, and adventure. Her capacity for love and inclusion was unmatched and her vibrant spirit and positive energy left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
Born prematurely at just 1.12 ounces, doctors questioned whether Tailar would have adequate quality of life. However, she answered the question, defying medical science, to beat the odds with sheer determination to thrive and live. With a heart full of compassion, Tailar was always available to offer a listening ear and a warm comforting smile to those in need. Her gentle spirit and acts of kindness knew no boundaries. Tailar cherished her relationship with her mom, Portia, and they spent countless hours of quality time together. They spent cherished time laughing and crying, rejoicing, and dreaming. Tailar loved her papa, Tony Matthews, too and held an incredibly special bond with him; secret blessings $ and all (insert Tailar smile). Tailar loved spending time with family and friends, holding each moment close to her heart. She had an uncanny ability to spread warmth and affection, creating a sense of belonging for everyone fortunate enough to know her. It was not just her gentle nature that defined her, Tailar was a constant source of inspiration and was often heard saying “it’ll be ok.” She embraced life’s challenges and thrived in new experiences. Her enthusiasm for trying new things was infectious, even if it was a little scary (adventures at Schlitterbahn Water Park).
Tailar was an avid reader, finishing twenty-five books last year and seventeen books this year alone (8,629 pages). She loved to read about love, life, people, and places. She was an advocate for self-care as seen by the facial masks and moisturizers she left behind (insert Tailar smile). She loved singing and dancing to Harry Styles, hanging out with good friends, playing family games in her backyard, and exploring nature. Their recent vacation to Arizona was a highlight that Portia will share with Tailar for a lifetime. Tailar dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age and believed that with God, she could accomplish everything. She went from the preemie little angel who beat the odds to become a resilient powerhouse young woman full of grace and wisdom.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, her amazing and courageous mother, Portia D. Matthews, loving grandfather, Tony Matthews, close friends she called family, beloved relatives, and colleagues.
As we mourn her departure, let us remember the intentional joy she brought into our lives. Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to live on in our hearts forever.
Rest in peace Tai-Tai. We love you forever!
