Vera Eleanor Johnson

Vera Eleanor Johnson age 87 died April 22, 2023, in Austin Texas. She was born to Clifford and Elvera Anderson in Kingston, Minnesota and graduated from Litchfield High School in Litchfield, Minnesota where she met Robert W Johnson. They married in 1953 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church of Kingston. When Bob joined the Army in 1954, he and Eleanor began an adventure moving around the country and returning to Minnesota with their children when Bob was stationed in Vietnam and Korea.

Bob retired from the Army in 1974 bringing the family to Austin, Texas. She was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church and served the community through Austin Caregivers. She became a founding leader and constant volunteer of Sanctuary Respite Care based out of Faith UMC and Austin New Church.

Eleanor had a passion for genealogy and compiled many books of her and Bob’s family trees. Her findings took them to Sweden and Finland where they met relatives that she corresponded with for many years.

After Bob’s death in 1995 she married Bob Herrell in 2000 until his death in 2003.

Eleanor was a generous, compassionate, and giving person. She is survived by her sisters Polly Olson and Joyce Haglund, children Mary Johnson (Peggy), Gayle Sellers (Rick), Bob Johnson II (Cathy) and Kevin Johnson (Debbie), her grandchildren Peter Johnson, Gabriel Johnson, Hannah Walker, Garrett Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Lindsay Johnson, Christina Sellers, Alex Sellers, and Bob Johnson III, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Her burial at Fort Sam Houston was privately held.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, 3:00pm at Austin New Church, 2701 S. Lamar Blvd, Austin, Tx 78704. The service will begin to be broadcasted from Facebook live starting at 2:45pm. Please join by selecting the "Join Livestream" link below.
