Victoria Teinert Hamann, 96, passed away peacefully on Monday September 11, 2023. She was born near Jarrell, Texas on August 4, 1927 to Albert and Clara Braun Teinert. She was baptized on August 28, 1927 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Walburg and confirmed there on April 6, 1941. Her confirmation class learned everything in German, and then the next year had to relearn it in English.
Victoria attended a small country school, Ranger Branch, through 8th grade. She attended Georgetown High School and graduated from Thrall High School in 1944. She moved to Austin that year. The rest of the family joined her when she found a house for them. She worked at the U.S. Post Office for seven years.
Victoria joined St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in 1945 and met her future husband Granville Hamann there. They were married on June 24, 1948. She quit work when she was expecting her first child, and then stayed home to raise her children. They spent their entire married life in Austin.
Victoria was involved in many church activities over the years. She started at 17 as a Sunday school teacher, and went on to be a director and teacher in Vacation Bible school. She also served on the Altar Guild, as a Stephen Minister and many years as President of the Women of the Church. She began working with Lutheran World Relief when it started in 1945 and continued with the group as it broadened its mission. The group at St. Martin’s is now called Tack and Pack, and she bought supplies and organized boxes and paperwork for decades.
She also enjoyed playing games; she spent many hours with grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing Yahtzee. A sports enthusiast, she followed the Longhorns and any team with Kevin Durant. She loved traveling; she visited all 50 states and made a trip to the Holy Land with her sister.
Victoria was preceded in death by her husband Granville, her siblings Walt Teinert, Erna Mae Buzbee, and Edward Teinert and her brother-in-law Jim Buzbee.
Victoria is survived by her children Donna Gunter (Jeff), Jan Wetzel (Kramer), Gary Hamann and Joanne Hamann; her grandchildren Kristina Marsico (Travis), Jonathan Wilkinson, Douglas Gunter, and Virginia Joseph (Allan); great-grand children Brooklyn and Lincoln Marsico.
Memorial donations can be made to St. Martin’s Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or St. Martin’s WELCA Tack and Pack.
