

William Wood Ewen, age 82, passed peacefully in his sleep on December 29, 2013 in Lakeway, Texas after a long battle with Alzheimers. Bill was born on March 5, 1931 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Fae and William Andrew Ewen. Bill grew up in Dallas, Texas. He met his future wife, Joan Dealey of Santa Monica, California, at age 16 while she was visiting her Texas cousins in Dallas. Bill attended Jesuit High School in Dallas where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. Upon graduation, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds baseball franchise. His baseball career was interrupted by a two year stint in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in France.
Bill attended Southern Methodist University and graduated from North Texas State University in 1956. He accepted a job with Shell Oil Co., which afforded him and his family the opportunity to experience west Texas, Houston, New Jersey/New York and Denver, Colorado. Bill was very dedicated to his beloved wife and four children. He retired in 1987 and thence stayed active in Emmaus Catholic Church, the Lakeway Service League, Meals on Wheels and various clubs. He enjoyed golfing, his sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially their athletic endeavors.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Lynda Lee Ewen.Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan; sons William S. Ewen of Austin, Texas; Michael A. Ewen and wife Susan of Milford, Iowa; and James D. Ewen and wife Brenda of Tyler, Texas; 7 grandchildren: Carmen Childres, William B. Ewen, Joseph Strmiska, Scott and Paul Ewen, Niccole and Monica Ewen; and 4 great grandchildren: Ali and Carlie Childres, and Addison and McKenzie Ewen.
A visitation and vigil will be held at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 W. William Cannon, Austin, Texas, at 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Vigil on Thursday, January 2. Funeral Mass to be held on Friday, January 3 at Emmaus Catholic Church, 1718 Lohmans Crossing, Lakeway, Texas at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at the Church. Private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association or United Cerebral Palsy.
