Born in Stamford, Texas on April 2, 1939, Bill built a life defined by faith, humility, curiosity, and steadfast values. School was not a setting in which he thrived. Instead, through initiative, intelligence, and hard work, he built a successful career as a geophysicist in the oil exploration industry. His work took him and his beloved wife, Kaye, on many adventures and moves. Together they lived briefly in Australia, where they had their son, and then across Texas, where their two daughters were born, and including a memorable chapter in Casper, Wyoming.
Bill was a thoughtful and inquisitive man who took genuine interest in other people. He asked questions not out of politeness, but out of care and curiosity. He wanted to understand the circumstances that shaped a person’s life, and he brought that same curiosity to every conversation. Family and friends often appreciated being around him because he made people feel interesting and worth knowing.
He was a man who cared deeply about living consistently with his values. Quietly and without seeking recognition, he gave back to others throughout his life. He was a frequent blood donor, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and served faithfully through his congregation, especially helping those who had fallen into financial hardship get organized and find a path forward. These acts of service flowed naturally from his faith, and the humility with which he carried them out did as well.
He also found joy in simple and familiar things: rooting for the Astros, researching family history to learn about the lives and circumstances of those who came before him, and planning family get togethers that he wanted to be memorable.
Those who loved Bill will remember his steady presence and the way he quietly helped others. We hope to honor him by carrying these traits forward in our own lives.
He is survived by his wife, Kaye; his children, Patrick and his wife Sandy, Shana, and Shelley; his grandchildren, Colin, Jack, Ryan, Charlie, and Finn; and his brother John.
A memorial service will be held on April 26 at 1 PM at Weed Corley Fish on Parkcrest Drive, followed by a reception at Chez Zee American Bistro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
