Eulogy:
We cannot describe Grandma in one word. She was hardworking, strong, courageous and loving. She adored her family and wanted what was only best for us. Nothing made her happier than our family gatherings. She always brought the beef, because no one could prepare it the way she did.
I am sure that we have all tasted and enjoyed her breads, jams, Christmas cookies, meat and chicken pot pies. Whether they were for your freezer, your in-laws or to ease your semester away at school, she was always there to keep your tummy full.
She knit socks for all of the men in her life. Nothing is warmer than a pair of socks knit by grandma.
Her house is adorned with pictures of her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Everyone knew never to call between 4:30 and 5:30. That was her time to watch the Young and the Restless. She followed their exploits for 30 years.
Between her obsession with keeping the stray cats out of her garden and killing the earwigs with hot soapy water, she had the best looking flower garden in Hull. She had a full body mosquito net suit that she wore to work in her flower bed, which was very intriguing to the Hull police on patrol, especially when she was out “illegally” watering at 4:00 in the morning.
Grandma's strength was tested when the family moved from the farm and bought the house in Hull. She went from being a homemaker on the farm to taking care of her ill husband as well as becoming the sole breadwinner of the family.
When Grandma was face with some adversity, she'd “pull up her boot straps” and plow through it.
Her favourite response to you when you were complaining was “You're young, you'll live.”
She'd never call her children by their right name. She'd start at the top of the list and work her way down until she got to the one that she wanted.
When the road conditions were bad, she always called all of her children to make sure they got home safely.
Grandma also enjoyed traveling. She made many trips to Switzerland to visit Doreen and her family. She also had the opportunity to travel to Greece.
When Doreen came to live with Grandma seven years ago, Grandma was so grateful to have someone to share the workload of running the house and maintaining her garden.
With the onset of her health problems, Doreen took on the responsibility of overseeing Grandma's diet and appointments.
Over the past few months, she became increasingly dependent on her children and her grandchildren, however, she remained feisty as ever and still spoke her mind.
Our family would like to thank Father Bill and are deeply grateful for his visits and his encouragement.
Grandma was a true example of courage, strength and love and she leaves that legacy to us all. We will all miss her very much and she will forever be in our hearts.
Grandma, today it is our turn to let you go and let God hold you in his hands.
