Passed away at the age of 89 from natural causes on December 11, 2016. For the past 30+ years she has spent her later years with her daughters Claudia and Jacqueline (predeceased) and grandchildren residing in Dallas, Texas. Alice was the fourth child born to the late Lee Junius Johnson and Mary Viola Harris-Johnson of Huntington. She was raised and spent most of her adult life in Huntington Station. Alice was one of 5 Johnson children that attended the South Huntington Schools. Later, Alice married the late Leonard Ward of Woodbury and raised three children Leonard C. Ward Jr.,Claudia Ward and Jacqueline Ward Sinius. Although she would remain in Texas for the latter years of her life, Alice was always quick to remind everyone that she was from Long Island, New York.
Alice was employed with the South Huntington Schools as a dietician. As one of the “cafeteria ladies” she touched many students coming through the school system in the 60’s through the late 1970s. This was a time that the school district was becoming increasingly diverse and there were few faculty and staff of color. Mrs. Ward was the first African American in the district’s dietary department. Her presence in the school provided students in general and students of color in particular with a level of comfort with her smile and for those who warranted a watchful or stern eye and or a word of encouragement.
Alice was a devout member of the Bethel A.M.E Church in Huntington and later St. Luke Community Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas.
Alice leaves to celebrate her life her children Leonard C. Ward, Jr of Babylon. and Claudia Ward of Carrollton, Texas; grand children, Maurice, Jarrett, Ramone, Erica, Eric, Kerwin; great grandchildren, Nickoali, Tiana, Jalen, Emma, Bailey, Brennan, Kessler and Addison. Alice also leaves her older brother John Johnson (Elnora), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Alice was predeceased by her husband Leonard C Ward, Sr, daughter Jacqueline and siblings Margaret Johnson (Bailey), William Johnson, Hester Johnson (Moore)
