

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles E. Schmidt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, at the age of 81. Charles passed away on April 25, 2026, in Babylon, New York. Born on October 5, 1944, in New York City, Charles was raised by his devoted parents, Charles and Lillian. He later met and married the love of his life, Mary, in Garden City, NY, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and adventure for 54 years.
Charles proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1962 to 1965, showing dedication and pride in his service to his country. After his military service, he earned his master’s degree and became a Special Education Teacher at Western Suffolk Boces, where he was known for his compassion, hard work, and unwavering commitment to his students. In addition, he coached many team sports and was an outdoor educator.
Outside of his professional life, Charles was an avid distance runner and marathon enthusiast. He participated in the Boston Marathon and took great pride in his training and perseverance. He also loved hiking the Appalachian Trail, sailing, and exploring the world through travel. His sense of adventure and love for life were evident in everything he did.
A man of deep faith and generosity, Charles was active in his community and volunteered in many capacities. He was a proud firefighter with the Babylon Electric Hose Company for 35 years, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a Catechist Teacher, and a member of Fred Shores Beach Club. His dedication to his family, friends, and community will be missed and cherished by all who knew him.
Charles is survived by his devoted wife, Mary; his children Kathleen (Todd) Brunn, Karen (Sean) Lynch, and Kevin (Teri) Schmidt; and his cherished grandchildren Luke and Tommy Brunn, Sean Charles and Colin Lynch, and Lucy and Elliott Schmidt. He is also remembered with love by his siblings, Kenneth, Louis, and Matthew Schmidt.
Family will receive friends at Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, 448 W. Main Street, Babylon, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 2:00 pm-4:30 pm & 7:00 pm-9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place on April 30, 2026, at 11:15 am at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 39 N Carll Ave, Babylon, NY 11702.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in memory of Charles to the Babylon Fire Department Scholarship Committee, 153 West Main Street, Babylon, NY 11702, in honor of his legacy and commitment to the community.
