September 19, 1947 – March 24, 2025
Joseph Rhodes, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in March 2025. Born on September 19, 1947, to Austin and Effie Rhodes, Joseph was raised in Nassau County, surrounded by his brothers and sisters. From a young age, he embodied a strong work ethic and an unshakable sense of reliability.
At the age of 16, Joseph met the love of his life Carolann(Cookie) by chance at a swimming hole in Oceanside. That chance encounter marked the beginning of a lifelong love story. In a simple yet meaningful elopement, Joseph and his beloved wife began their journey together, and soon after, they welcomed four children: Joseph Jr(Carmelina Rhodes)., Billy(Caren Rhodes), Scott(Nancy Rhodes), and Kristie(Billy Riccio). Joseph’s dedication as a father was evident in every aspect of his life. He coached his children in soccer and passed down everything he knew, shaping their lives with wisdom, love, and guidance.
Joseph was a man of many talents. He was a passionate marathon runner, a skilled furniture maker, and a proud sanitation worker. His work ethic was unmatched, and all he needed to know for his job was “two cans, two covers.” But his greatest peace came when he was near the water. An avid clammer, Joseph found solace by the shores, where he could reconnect with nature and embrace the quiet beauty of the sea.
In later years, Joseph was blessed with the love of 8 grandchildren: Kayla, Kyle Rhodes, Lily, Lucas Rhodes, Vincent, Sonny, Matteo, Leo Riccio, who affectionately called him “Pop Pop”, "Papa", or the playful “Popperoni and Cheese.” His role as a grandfather brought him immeasurable joy, and his family will forever cherish the time they spent with him.
Joseph’s legacy is one of hard work, loyalty, and love. He will be remembered as a man who took pride in everything he did, whether it was raising his family, working with his hands, or enjoying the simple pleasures of life by the water.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and many family members who will miss him deeply. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Good Shepherd Hospice.
