On January 30, 2021; EDWARD JOSEPH JENKINS; beloved husband of the late Ima Lee Jenkins (nee McCall); loving father of Jennifer Lee Jenkins of Minneapolis and and Kathryn Jenkins, father-in-law of Douglas Lyford of Baltimore, passed peacefully in his sleep at his home in Baltimore.
Ed was born on July 29, 1923, the only child of Stanley and Winifred (Connolly) Jenkins. He lived his entire life in Baltimore, where he attended the Cathedral School and graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in 1941. Unlike many of his peers at that time, he was unable to serve in World War II, due to having severe asthma, but found employment at a munitions factory after high school, and worked briefly as an ambulance driver as a member of the Maryland National Guard. Ed worked at the Social Security Administration for over thirty years, where he met his wife Lee in 1953. They were married for forty-five years, until her untimely death in 1998 from lymphoma. After decades of living in the Baltimore suburbs, the couple bought a rowhouse near Hampden in Baltimore City to serve as their retirement home in 1995. Ed was a devout Catholic for all of his life, and was most recently a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas parish in Hampden.
Ed had an encyclopedic knowledge of, and appreciation for, jazz music. He frequented the jazz clubs of Baltimore in the 1940’s and was joined by Lee in the 1950’s. Ed and Lee were British sports car enthusiasts in the first decade of their marriage, and owned a succession of MGs, Triumphs and Jaguars, which Ed raced in a few rallies at Marlboro, Maryland and Summit Point, West Virginia. In his younger years, Ed enjoyed playing recreational tennis and followed the pro game for many years. He was a big fan of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team as well as the Baltimore Colts football team. He never forgave owner Bob Irsay for moving the team to Indianapolis. Ed was also an avid duckpin bowler, participating in league play for most of his life. His high game in bowling was 200. He loved chocolate and any kind of ice cream.
