George knew how to enjoy the simple things in life - a cold National Boh, a baseball game, a family cookout, a New Year’s Eve dance, a strong hand of Pinochle, or an afternoon on the golf course. As a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he put his family first before everything else. Despite his quiet, unassuming personality, he was also known for his strong and cheerful character, and he left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Born on West 36th Street in Hampden on November 2, 1926, George was a lifelong Baltimorean. He attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in the early 1940s, enrolling in an accelerated course so that he could graduate early to join the Navy during World War II. After the war, he married Roberta, and they eventually moved to Medfield Avenue, where they were part of a close-knit circle of family and friends. They enjoyed attending dances at the Ranger’s Social Club, playing cards, going to the beach, and spending afternoons on The Boat. In their Medfield home, George and Roberta raised their three daughters, Susan, Karen, and Pamela. After Roberta’s death, George later married Virginia, and they spent many happy years together on Oak Lane. George and Virginia were involved in a number of social clubs, went on bus trips together, and loved spending winters in Florida. They were also active members of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
George worked as a steamfitter for much of his life and remained involved with the local union well after his retirement. Energetic and independent even into his later years, George was never one to relax in a rocking chair. He always kept a busy social calendar, shooting pool at Bykota Senior Center, hitting golf balls at the driving range, playing cards and Bingo with friends, going out for sour beef and dumplings, and participating in the Wednesday’s Choice social club. An avid fan of the Orioles and the Ravens, he never missed watching a game with a National Boh in hand.
For many years, George was the center and heart of a very strong family. He never missed a birthday, graduation, wedding, anniversary, or holiday, and he was meticulously fair with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. He loved spending time with his family and watching them grow - taking Green Gang trips to Ocean City and Deep Creek Lake, eating crabs together, and teaching his grandchildren to play Pinochle and shoot pool. George was always proud of the bonds that held his family together, a legacy that will continue on long after his death.
